Strength Routine for woman in her 50's...

I need some input here. My mom and her husband have decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle. They both joined WW and are doing well! They were both shocked to find out how much they were actually putting into their mouthes. :)

Anyway, my mom is in her mid-50's and has been overweight for most of her adult life. I would like to design a short, uncomplicated routine for her for strength training. She's nowhere near ready for Cathe...someday I'll introduce her. She is getting 3 and 5 lb dumbells and I am going to get her some bands. Oh - and for cardio, she is getting a treadmill.

Any suggestions? I think she is going to try and catch Denise Austin on Lifetime but she travels for work so it will be off and on.

Thanks in advance!

I think Denise Austin's Personal Training System (or others by her) might be good idea. PTS has 10 minutes of weight and cardio routines and go from beginner to advanced (well, Denise's version of "advanced") but she's not intimidating and very encouraging. (annoying? well, that's a whole other thread...) HTH and I think it's great that your mom and her husband are making this choice to improve their health! I only wish my in-laws were as motivated!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

Thank you both for your suggestions!! I didn't even think of Leslie Sansone. And I bet I can pick up some of these DVD's for her at the local consignment shop for cheap!

So my plan is to send her the following (in a flat rate USPS box...lol) - a set of 3 and 5 pounds weights, two bands and several DVD's. She should be all set!!!

THANKS!!!!

If you can find them .. from the makers of the Firm .. FitPrime .. it is designed for the more mature adult .. there were some good workouts .. not the easiest .. but easy to follow and build on. Not sure if you can find them now or not.

Gin Miller also put out some slower paced shaping workouts ..that may be something to look into. Again maybe not "easy" .. but easy to follow and adapt.

for your mother maybe some Pilate workouts .. sure her DH would not like it .. but if she travels that is something easy to bring along w/o the extra weights etc ... I like the Windsor Pilate workouts - basic but effective.

HTH!!!:)
