"Stranger Than Fiction"

I saw it last night with DH and I think it's heavy on the stranger side. Will Ferrell did a great job though. The theatre was full of teenagers(we went to the 7:30 show), and they seemed restless. I think they were expecting a different kink of Will Ferrell movie.

I saw both Will Ferrell and Dustin Hofmann on the Today Show this week I think this is a very different kind of will Ferrell movie. I think those who go expecting it to be his usual 'comedy' movie are going to be really disappointed. They both areed that it weighs more heavily on the drama side. That said, I'm still going to see it. I think it is the kind of movie I would really enjoy.

Those restless teenagers deserved what they got. It's a waste of time to just walk into a movie not knowing anything except that Will Ferrell is in it. It's easy to find out a bit about a movie before seeing it. I think Stranger Than Fiction sounds interesting and I will see it when it comes out on DVD.

I haven't seen it, but the previews do make it look like a comedy. But I heard some critics talking about it as a 'dramatic turn' for Will Ferrel. Seemed rather contradictory (vs. the previews).

Is it kind of like when Jim Carrey did "The Truman Show"? Some comic elements, but a serious undercurrent?

I actually think comic actors are also very often good at drama (perhaps because they are used to dealing with emotions). The first Jim Carrey movie I ever saw was "Doing Time on Maple Drive," where he played the alcoholic son of a dysfunctional family (he's also coming out with a new drama soon).

A lot of critics are comparing this to Jim Carrey in The Truman Show. I think the marketing people probably thought it best to make it appear as a comedy. In the interviews I saw they both said that there are some funny scenes but that on the whole the movie was more a thoughtful consideration of, "does art imitate life or life imitate art?"

I definitely agree that comic actors can be extraordinarily good at drama. I think in a lot of ways they can really get the subtlety of emotions/behavior.
