Step without the step?

My summer rental started last w/e, & I have very limited space there. So for the next 3 months I hit the gym 3 nights a week instead of lifting on the w/e so I don't have to spend the extra money at the Gold's down the shore. I try to do cardio & core on the w/e, & I have a VCR & DVD player, I have a pilates mat, but I really don't have space for a step.

So of course I have Kick Max, KPC & MIC to use there, but I'm wondering if I can do all of MIC without the step? If that works, maybe I'll bring some of the more basic step workouts there........has anyone ever tried a Cathe step tape sans step? I'm not the most coordinated person in the world, & I'm afraid if I try something like this I'll wind up tripping all over myself.

Any thoughts?

Laura, Cathe said, when she was recovering from her knee injury, that she would step using the yoga mat. Obviously you don't get the increased benefit of the height and power BUT you would at least have a center for the activity so you'd be less likely to crash into other things, don't you think? :)

Personally I'd probably focus on non-step cardio. Do you have anyone besides Cathe? Maybe time to try out other instructors? Netflix has a huge selection, so maybe it would be worth a membership for the summer...

PS: I am SO JEALOUS of the beach house! :7 What part of NJ do you stay in? We used to go to Point Pleasant and of course Wildwood, then moved on to Ocean City, MD. This year I think we're going to forego as we're putting in a pool and new deck and it's costing me major $$$. Sigh! I love the ocean!

A couple of years ago when I pulled a muscle in my calf, I started back doing step without the step. It really is quite doable:) It feels a little awkward at first, but you get used it.

Oh the yoga mat is a good idea, I can just pretend it's a step...:p Plus the floor is linoleum so the mat will be easier on the knees. Thanks!

Marie, our house is in Pt. Pleasant, northern end by the inlet. It's right on the beach--I can't tell you how awesome it is to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean! But this is my last summer--I decided it's time to start acting like a grown up & put my money into my house & retirement.

<sigh> Growing up sucks.x(

if you mean pt. pleasant beach,NJ i used to live there. i graduated from pt.pleasant beach high ten years(wow reunion should be coming up LOL). its really great there but i used to also work on the boardwalk and that was the worst. party animals at the bars were just so horrible to deal with. but man that beach had alot of good times. i do miss being able to spend a summer's night hanging on the beach but i really don't miss NJ in general.

Don't know if this is helpful to you or not, but I've done step workouts in ridiculously tight spaces. I just have the high step--not a full size step. Yesterday I did a step workout in between all the junk/boxes we have stuffed into our tiny apartment for moving. I think I did the workout in a space that was less than half the size of a coffee table. I just modify anything that takes up room--eg, doing basic steps instead of triples around, and that sort of thing. Don't know if I would want to do that routine more tahn once n a while, though. Very constricting!

do you mean you don't have room to store a step, or there's your workout space isn't large enough? Do you have an outside deck or porch? Maybe you could turn the TV to face a window and exercise outside? I don't know your setup, so I'm just throwing out ideas. Enjoy the beach!

If anyone could do that, Shannon, Laura could! After all, she was the one who did Rhythmic Step by watching the reflection of the tv on her Christmas tree bulbs LOL!!

Cathe once recommended to someone that she put a bath towel on the floor as a pseudo-step. To up the intensity, I would suggest that every time Cathe does basic steps, or running on the step, Laura substitute jumping jacks, or jogging on the spot (with high knees, perhaps).

Good luck!
