Steadily gaining weight for no reason HELP!

Hey all,

I'm starting to get frustrated. I'm 5'2", 18 years old and I started out 110 lbs in mid-december. When I went home (I'm from NY and go to college at UNC-CH Freshman) I purchased Cathe Freidrich videos and starting doing cardio and more weights and I ate more (I had to --> family thought I was too thin)

Well it was no suprise to me that I gained a couple of pounds soon after since I increased my calories (now 115-117). But I'm not really happy with it and want to go back to 110-112.

Since I went back to college, I tried to cut down on the calories and do more cardio (50 min on the precor - highest incline with the highest resistance 7x per week) on less on the weights.

However, the scale is not budging, rather, It's starting to slightly increase. I don't know If I'm overtraining, or if it's fluid retention, or I'm not getting enough calories to sustain the exercixe, or if it's just gaining the muscle from cathe videos.

I eat relatively normal, Fruit in the morning with skim milk, low calorie bagel with cream cheese or whole wheat bread with 2 slices of turkey and a piece of fruit and dinner is usually vegtebales with deli turkey or cheese slices (don't have access to meat) homemade bread (grandma made for me) and hummus with fruit.

I know this is long and confusing, but I need advice!

It could be muscle muscle weighs more than fat. I wanted to do this for my thighs, however, I wanted to quit weight training I received some good advice on here so I continued with the weights and increased a little and my thighs are not slimmimg just becoming muscle. I have started Spinning to shock my body so we will see how that helps.

Hi,
Try adding some snacks during the day and see if you are eating too little. The other thing is, if your clothes still fit, you are probably gaining muscle, which weighs more than fat. Lastly, you mentioned you are a college student, I gained about 10+ pounds my freshman year going from 100 up til about 112 at 5 feet tall. I credit party foods and alcohol to that gain. If you are a typical college student, that could be the culprit. If you continue to eat healhy and watch what you eat, you will stay thin even as you get older. My friends who ate everything in college and didn't gain weight ,now after 2 kids in their 30's have wweight to lose. Since, I have watched my diet since college, I am 102 at 37 with 2 kids. good luck.

It almost sounds like you are not eating enough calories for the intensity of the exercise that you are doing. Also, there not enough protein there, either. I would add a few more protein sources to your snacks and see if that helps.

I'm far from an expert here, but I do have the same problem,I watch what I eat, workout 4-6x a wk,and the scale won't budge.but the inches are going a little at a time. I measure once a mnth, and I always lose something somewhere! I try to eat clean foods, not all the time, but most of the week. and on days I work out I do eat between 1500-1800 calories, cause I know that cathe's workout tend to burn atleast 300-500.Do you count calories?sometimes you can eat alot less then you think, count for one day and just see!

To Tell you the truth,I quit focusing on the scale and I knew as long as I was watching everything I ate(except the one meal a week I get to eat anyting I want)and working out at least 4x a week,I wasn't going to gain weight, just muscle! right now I'm doing Cathe's begginer rotation,I lost 3/4 of a inch in my thighs the first two weeks!but the scale stayed the same,so I rarely weigh!

for about three months the scale was all I focused on,and I was ready to scream!!!just don't let it drive you crazy!

Amy:)

Thanks everybody for the advice!

I have another question though..haha all these questions...

I mentioned that I have been eating homemade rolls that my grandmother made for dinner...but I don't know how many calories are in them...

It looks like a portuegese roll, except that it's a square shaped and has whole wheat flour.

I've been counting it as 300-350 calories for one roll. Would that be correct?

and to those who are wondering...I do not drink alchohol or eat junk food, that has been my rule for 2 years since I lost weight (went from 153-112 in 2 years from the time I was 15 years old)
