Squats with heavy weight?

Hi all,
I started a rotation with S&H, and I love the leg work. I'm just having trouble holding the weight that I need to hold in order to do the work.
I have a barbell, but with 40# on it, I can barely get it over my head, and then getting it off my shoulders is comical.
This morning I used a 45# dumbbell, but again, holding that at shoulder level is a challenge (although better and heavier than the barbell).

How do you all manage heavy weight for squats if you don't have a squat rack at home?
I want to/can go up to 50#, but I can't HOLD it. :( I'm frustrated.

To use a weight that is heavier than feels safe to lift overhead, I add a weighted vest (an adjustable one that goes up to 20#).

That's a great idea Kathryn! That hadn't occurred to me. I'll have to look at the prices of some of the weighted vests.

Remember, you don't have to have the weight on your shoulders for it to be effective. You can leave it in a relaxed position hanging in front of you, just like you do w/DBs. I think it changes the center of gravity, but you'll still get the resistance.

On a sidenote, if you choose to hold heavy weights that way, lifting straps can be very helpful.

Thanks Kathryn.....

I'm planning on Purchasing a weighted vest cause its somewhat hard for me to lift a 50 pound barbell over my head after the 2nd set of squats when doing Slow and Heavy for legs, the 50 pounds doesnt seem enough!! I feel like I can go heavier. Thanks!!!
