Spinning- Interval workout?

I was reading another post where Cathe recommended doing 2 interval workouts and 2 non-interval workouts. Would spinning be considered an interval workout? My HR goes up and down, we do all different paces, positions, etc.

Would non-interval workouts be like Rhythmic Step or a kickboxing class? It seems like most of my workouts end up being interval workouts!

Hi, L23! The mode of the workout (i.e. running, kickbox, hi/lo, step, spin, swim) does not determine whether the workout is an interval format or not; what makes an interval workout an interval workout is the presence of briefer ultra-high or all-out intensity blasts within the cardio workout bout. Thus you could make any cardio workout that does not incorporate resistance equipment into an interval workout by bringing in these blasts.

In spinning, if the class is formatted to maintaining a constant, elevated but steady-state heart rate, it is a non-interval class; conversely, if there are high-intensity blasts that bring you to your peak aerobic threshold, and brief recovery period after that, then it is an interval-spinning class.

Hope this helps!
