Spinner vs. Stationary Bike: What's the Difference

I'm looking into buying an exercise bike. As I look, I'm finding split into the categories of spinners and stationary bikes. What exactly is the difference between the two?

If spinner bikes are like the ones used in spinning classes, I can tell you that they're more pricey. But, for me anyway, I get a much tougher workout. The bike allows you to be more "active" in your workout, by changing positions (sitting, standing, climbing, jumps, etc) and the resistance. There are also spinning videos out there for motivation. If you like spinning classes, then maybe a spinner is better for you. Try out each before you make the investment.

Sorry if this isn't what you meant!

Spinning type bikes are more like road (racing) bikes & stationary bikes are more like beach cruisers with gears. As the poster above noted, it's easier to stand & "climb" on a spinning type bike. You can also work hamstrings/glutes easier on a spin bike compared to the stationary bike (think Lifecycle).

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely try before I buy. It sounds like a spinner would be more my style.

But if money is an object, I do pretty well faking a spin workout on an Airdyne. I stand in the pedals, move back in the seat and just pedal hard intervals without increasing the resistance. Where there's a will and a cheapskate, there's a way.
