Spilt Routines vs Pyramid Style

Hi Guys ~

I am curious to hear what everyone thought about Spilt Routines vs. The Pyramid Style workouts..

I have heard pros & cons regarding each type of training. Where do you think you would have the best results? I am looking to build muscle/definition. I am an Ecto Body Type & currently following Body For Life.

I heard spilt routines might be better b/c you can lift to your max, vs Pyramid your working your entire UB and fatigue faster??

Any suggestions?

TIA ~

Hi Jennifer...I have gotten good results with both. P90X is more of a split routine and that worked well for me. What you could try is 4 weeks of a split and then 4 weeks of Pyramids as Pyramids are actually my favorite way of working out. But switching and confusing the muscle is very helpful for muscle growth...HTH...:)

FYI:'Split' and "Pyramid" don't have to exclude each other. A split is just how the body parts are divided (and PUB/PLB IS a split routine: a 2-day split), while Pyramids are a set/rep protocol.

I think that when starting out with weight training, it's good to do a full body workout 2 days a week, working up to 3 days a week. Then go to a two-day split (like the pyramids), then eventually to a three-day split. The fewer parts you work during a workout session, the more work those parts can do and the heavier you can lift. Also, they get more recovery time, which is another essential aspect of buildig muscle.

As an ecto (upper body!), I had my best upper body results doing P90X (because of both the work and recovery in this system, and perhaps especially because of the circuit-type set-up of the workouts, which allows for recovery for specific muscles while others are working).

Overall, I think a split routine is more helpful for building muscle, but it's good to shake things up, and a pyramid workout would be good to do once you've built more of a muscle base.

As an ecto, I've also had the best results doing P90X and Slow & Heavy. I like the extra rests in Slow & Heavy. I need them.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

I feel that maybe I will be able to lift heavier if I just do 1 to 2 body parts a day (ie) S&H & GS Series.

Do you think this would be a good place to start?
Would S&H be better since it is closer to the P90X series?
