Speaking of CELLULITE....

Someone mentioned this jokingly in another thread, but I thought I would ask: which of us have been afflicted with this and how have you gone about neutralizing it?

I have the beginnings of it in the back of my thighs (where else). I have had pretty good luck upping my lower body work (lunges particularly seem to work) and also rubbing lotion in every day. I read that the lotion itself doesn't matter, it's the rubbing motion that helps to move things around.

So what is your remedy?

Cheers,
Marie

Oh man, this subject will just make me go from sad to sadder..
I just choose to ignore the stuff and/or tan the heck out of it in the summertime.
:) dmd

Marie,

If you can find a rememdy you will be worth billions of $$$.

I've had it since I was ten years old and I've learned to accept it because although I think it can diminish with loss of fat, it's genetic and almost impossible to get rid of. Sorry to be so negative and I'd be tickled pink to hear some positive responses.:)

Okay, I'll bow out of this one...I have nothing positive to say about cellulite:D . It would be something if there were a cure for the stuff.dmd

All I can say about cellulite (that would be allowed on this board) is: pick yourself up a copy of Star magazine when they have the "Stars with cellulite" issues, and it will make you feel much better about yourself (when you see that even Britney--gasp!--has some of the orange-peel stuff we all hate).

Mine must be genetic because no matter how hard I workout or watch what I eat, I have just one spot that won't go away no matter what. Sometimes there are days when it looks like it is almost gone and then other days it seems to say, "oh hi, here I am again".
Once I was so desperate that I did something stupid and took the vacuum cleaner hose to my legs thinking I might smooth it out. I only left blood spots up and down my thigh which scared the heck out of me. Really dumb and would never do that again. LOL

I have a little 'hail damage' myself. Since my early 20's I've gained weight twice and lost it twice and both times added a bit of cellulite. I'm within 2% of the body fat I want to be at and I still have a couple ripples. Lunges have improved the situation because building up your glutes and hamstrings will 'fill you out' a little, but there's really nothing to do about it.

Now my remedy is to ignore it! :D

Remedy? Honestly, for a lot of people, there just isn't one. I've had cellulite for as long as I can remember. It's genetic and biological and ain't much that will make it go away. I find that it looks less severe when I am in decent shape, but it's always there, taunting me. *sigh* Oh well, in some ways it's good to know we're not alone - we're all dealing with similar problems.

I had some ripples during my very unhealthy days...the days of nachos, beer and a dailey Big Mac Meal. Once I switched to a MUCH healthier lifestyle and incorporated intense leg presses (using 40-50 pounds) they seem to have gone away! Here are things that I think help the most:

**H20, H20 and MORE H20. If they seem less apparant than other days, you may be well hydrated!
**Lotion, any lotion, just for the massage affect
**Lower body work
**Healthy eating that helps with body fat reduction.

Just my opinion and what has worked for me! Again...opinion based on my own results.

If I squeeze my thighs in certain spots, I can see signs of mild orange peel. My best and fasted solution to that is I don't squeeze my thigh in that spot anymore;-)

O.k., I JUSt received May's issue of Oxygen and someone asked Amy Fadhli about the causes of cellulite and here are the causes:

-Insufficient water intake
-Poor eating (alcohol, caffeine and fried foods)
-Crash dieting (said to be one of the worst causes)
-All Sauturated fats (build up cellulite)
-Smoking
-Meds that cause water retention
-Oral contraceptives (the estrogen causes fat cells to enlarge and cause water retention)
-Lack of exercise

So put away your vacuum cleaner attachments and drink some water, put down those cigarettes (you better NOT be smoking), eat clean and GET MOVING!!!

I have to chime in here with a very depressing comment.

I NEVER had cellulite until I had a complete hysterectomy and went on hormone replacement therapy. Ba Boom it seemed to come over night. I am not at all over weight and I use a 100 pound barbell for SH squats.
I drink water by the gallons and eat very healthy 80%+ of the time ( I haven't had a fast food meal in more than 15 years, honest).

Ah the unfairness of womanhood.

Charlotte!

Oh my goodness...you had me laughing outloud on the vacuum cleaner method! I'm with you...somedays it looks better and other days, it is back in full force. They say it can be hereditary but I have a sis who smokes, eats high fat, doesn't exercise and drinks lots of coffee and she has VERY lil' cellulite. Waaah, what is wrong with this picture? I do admit that mine looks a bit better when I am eating as clean as possible, drinking lots of water and exercising hard! I will keep at it til someone comes up with a cellulite cure for us all.

Yes, it is unfair. My entire length of my thighs are covered in it-from the knee up.:( My butt is free of cellulite though. I think running and lifting weights had dramatically decreased the appearance, but it's still there. Like other posters said, some days are better than others.

Imafitnessfreak-was your cellulite ever really bad? Or did you just have a mild case of it?

Lori

Mild case anf more like a few "ripples". If I was just standing there you wouldn't see "orange peel" look. The Q&A I read in Oxygen said heredity does play a part but so does so many other things (listed above) that we can control.

I think the best you can do is drink a lot more water since we all are already working out (Cathe works the legs better than ANYONE) and paying attention to what we eat.

The article really stresses increasing fluids to rinse out the toxins that get caught in the fatty deposits and give it that peel look.
