sore throat

Cathlete
just starting back to exercise:(---what stopped me before was the extreme sore throats and sinus problems that would happen--and stick around.

today i tried focusing on breathing through my nose -- which is really hard--- i was doing a full body workout--- especially hard during long leg segment.

any thoughts?

This may sound crazy, but I have the same problem when I take some time off and then get back into working out heavily/eating right. It's almost like my body's way of expelling toxins. I'll have a sore throat for a week or so and then feel better. I've started drinking either a vitamin water 0 or a Sobe Lifewater 0 (both sweetened naturally) instead of plain water during my workouts, and I have found that in addition to extra energy (which probably all is in my head), I haven't had any of these problems anymore.

If you have access to any, you could try some yoga workouts for a little while. You're supposed to breathe through your nose in yoga, so it might work better for you right now.

What I've found really helps for a sore throat - no matter what the cause. Is Traditional Medicinal Throat Coat tea. They sell it at the grocery stores, WalMart, Target - not too hard to find. It smells like black licorice and feet, and tastes a lot like licorice. Not the most pleasant thing, but not awful either. A little honey helps with the taste. It works for hot or iced. Maybe try brewing up a big batch and keeping it iced and sip that during your workout instead of water.

Also, what kind of environment are you exercising in? Outside and it could be pollen or pollutants bugging you. If you're inside is it pet fluff that your sucking in? In a damp basement - mold spores? By the laundry room - lint fluff from the dryer? Or is it just really dry where you're at. Perhaps a humidifier? Really humid? - damp basement again. Humidity just stuffs the heck out of my noggin. And really really dry air gives me headaches, the insides of my head feel all shriveled up.

I'm not trying to comment on your housekeeping skills, just tossing out some suggestions.

thanks...

my sinus issues happen anywhere i work out-- gym, home...

it has derailed my workouts for 16 months--- as the sore throats begin-- sinus issues come as well as chronic fatigue--- mind boggling--- no one has answers- have been to several doctors.

Have you tried to cut out dairy products? I had recurring sinus infections and sore throat for years. When I cut out dairy products, the problems disappeared. Just a thought, it might be worth a try.

I hope you feel better soon.
