Soosanasana and Bobbishtanga...I am a yoga failure

RE: Pleeeease don't give up!!

More encouragement to keep going....if you like that feeling afterwards, but not during, try to find a way to focus on the afterwards feeling while you're struggling. Or back off just enough that the struggle is less intense.

If you're a weight junkie, try to remember your early lifting days and how long it took to be able to lift what you can today. Give yourself time to be a beginner.

I would also second and third the recommendations for Power Yoga for Happiness and Strength and Spirit, especially the latter because the instruction is so good and pace slow. My muscle bound, fast twitch, former offensive lineman hubby loves that tape. He looks nothing like the participants, but he feels as good as they do.

I don't mean to proselytize, but your revealing that you get the buzz afterward suggests that you're doing everything right. In a way, yoga is a kind of internal weightlifting struggle within your body. You're opening and changing connections bound by the toughest connective tissue we have.

The way Tony teaches yoga has made it accessible and likeable to so many people who wouldn't have done it otherwise. The main reason I bought into the P90X program was its extensive use of yoga and the holistic attitude that indicated. Tony kind of says, "I'm no yogi, but this is a great thing to do to enhance and improve my overall fitness. So, kids, here's how I do it." That's much easier to get into than most routines done by yoga teachers. That doesn't mean it's watered down. You also might like a guy named Steve Ross who does a show on Oprah's cable channel.

You have to keep trying because your posts about it are so fun to read. Bryan does need someone like you in his vids!

RE: it might still grow on you

Ah, yes, the Freddy's. I really miss being addicted to shoes. It seems so pointless until I get my foot working properly. Did you know Rodney Yee has a cable show? It's on in the early AM so I make coffe and watch him and drool. There's more than one reason to love yoga!

Susan....are you a therapist/psychologist by chance?

You didn't TELL me that Energize was rated intermediate/advanced on collage video. I'm okay now. :). You are just so smart when it comes to getting to the root of the problem and I think you nailed it!! I'm going to keep trying it every so often and see where this leads - I promise. NOW...I think you've failed a bit in your advice to Rocky....or maybe he just isn't listening to you. Squirrels can be a bit self absorbed when emotionally entangled and just tune you out altogether. Tell him to "get over it". There are other rodents in the forest, other nuts on the tree, other berry's on the branch, etc....

Ann thanks for your comments. I too have blocked the memories of my earlier weight lifting days because they (VERY BRIEFLY) involve Jane Fonda and 10 pound bicep curls (and if I try hard to dig into my brain for details....I think they were tough x( x( ). BUT I like the analogy and especially the "internal weightlifting struggle" that goes on while doing yoga. Some assimilation is going on now in my little fast twitched brain!!!

Bobbi, you are too much, we didn't give any legos this year to children. WE are getting wise in our old age!!! GI Joes do NOT require any assembly. But we were suckered into Xbox some how. Do you have a 14 year old boy? If so you know how devious and incredibly skilled they can be at getting what they want. "Hey mom do you know that you can purchase a whole exercise program that charts your workouts for the entire year on xbox. You create your own workouts with this amazon chick and plan every move. Mom you have to get this, I just know it will revolutionize your workouts and you'll end up with some incredible DELTS". Oh now that's LOW Tyler. Hey Tyler....can this woman do yoga????? hmmmmmmm okay maybe we should get Xbox. I just know I'm more flexible that this chick on xbox and if not I can PROGRAM HER to be less flexible. HE'S ONTO SOMETHING HERE!!!

So my name would have been Gloria???? I wouldn't have thrown your book out the window. But I may have thrown your Bryan Kest tape out, but NOT anymore. I'm a refocused person now thanks to all of you. Blessings!!

RE: it might still grow on you

Gloria, that's synonymous with "evil", isn't it? I like "Blessings" but someone named Briannasannaashtanga should say, "Namaste".

My son is 7 and although the Lego box might say 7+, that's a lie. I am an expert at Lego building and when in the mood, don't mind at all. Today Sam is getting alot of "not right now" which will go on until tomorrow. Tyler is a smart young man, possibly brilliant . Must take after his mother.

We have a Playstation 2.

I'm thinking about throwing it out the window.

RE: it might still grow on you

Briee, I cannot tell you how much you make me laugh! I'm sitting here trying to come up with "other...in the..." squirrel analogies, but I can't keep up with your wit.

Rocky, on the other hand, doesn't appreciate what he calls your "condescending humor" and is off sulking on the highest branch of the new tree we gave him for Christmas. (Good thing the mansion in which we live has 100 ft ceilings.) I agree, he needs to get "over it." Fiona's been a bad influence.

LOL! You're funny Briee. I wouldn't start with Brian Kest. I'm trying to guess which DVD this is. If it is the 3 workout set from the mid 90s that wouldn't be a good place to start. Those are tough. I think you shouldn't give up on yoga though. My favorite yoga workouts are from Baron Baptiste. Most of his workouts show beginner modifications (at least the ones I own). You see people from all levels practicing yoga so you can start with the beginners while you improve with time. Another thing is that there are several types of yoga and you can find workouts for almost every type of yoga that exists from Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram to Kundalini and every type has an emphasis. What do you want to gain from yoga? Is it flexibility, strength, both or maybe you just want to do it for relaxation? Knowing what you want to gain from yoga in advance will help you choose a more appropriate workout to start with. Good luck.
