Some moving hints, please

We talk about everything else here, so can anyone give me any moving hints? How be to most efficient and organized? I have to little room in my current house that I can't do a lot of pre-packing. I have no room to put boxes, so the bulk of the packing has to wait till I can actually move stuff to the new house. I really don't have a lot to pack or my own personal stuff, but I want to be smart about this process.

Help, you guys!!!! Thanks in advance!!!

PS I'm very good about letting go of stuff and throwing out what I don't use. I'm going to sort through clothes and books and stuff like that and not move what I don't use.

Hey there!

What are you doing up before 5:00!!?? Man, I'm sitting here with lil' slits for eyes at almost 7:00. I think I shared this with you before but I'm not sure. We organized everything before we moved into Rubbermaid (or similar brand) tubs. For instance, all photo albums and pix went into one, crafts another, afghans & blankets another, of course Christmas things in about 5 of them!! Anyways, we marked the front of every tub and have them all sitting down on shelves in our basement and it's easy to find what we need when we need it. It was a bit pricey buying lots of Rubbermaids, (we did wait for sales on them) but being the packrat that I am, you shouldn't have to buy as many. Everything will stay dry too should we have a HEAVEN FORBID flood in the basement!! :-wow. Just an idea. They stack on top of each other well too if you have one wall somewhere at your place now to start packing. Just an idea. Good Luck~Can't wait to see your new wokout room!! Hi!

Well, on this subject I consider myself very knowledgeable. My husband and I have moved 11 times in 22+years of marriage - some across town, some across country.

Sounds like you are moving in town. I found that if I went through everything ahead of time and tossed the 'junk' - which is often up for debate :)! - then moving day was much better. Then, depending on how much transition time I had, I moved drawer to drawer, closet to closet. Several times (with the help of girlfriends :-jumpy) I moved all closets AND my whole kitchen before the actual moving day. The kitchen was a one-day all out effort using laundry baskets, again moving cupboard to cupboard and drawer to drawer. I would label cupboards etc so that mover-friends would be able to start unpacking immediately. The more little stuff you can move, the easier the final day becomes. Hope this helps. By the way, I would spend a couple of hours at the new place deciding how you want things, even if it delays the rest of the process.

Have fun!

Joanna

RE: Hey there!

What can I tell you...I fell asleep on the couch before 8:00 last night and was awake at 3:00am, and got up at 4:00am, then did Meaner Legs/PS Legs at 5:00am!

Oh MY!

Meaner AND PS in one swipe??? Zowie girl!! Okay, another challenge for me, right? That has to be a good feeling on your way to work knowing that you already accomplished such a feat. I crawled into bed around 1:00 A.M. I'm sure it will catch up here soon. Your-Friend-In-Fitness, DebbieH :)

RE: Oh MY!

Not all of both!!!! I did all of Meaner Legs and PS Legs from the inner thigh work until the start of the ab work. It took an hour, but that's OK. Time to haul out the shorts before we know it!!!!

Joanna, I'd actually come up with some of your ideas on my own....the moving closet to closet and drawer to drawer. I'm very lucky in that I don't have a big deadline for making this move. We may take as much as two weeks to complete it, so I can take my time. We are moving about 3.5 miles from my current house, and also it's on the way to work so I can drop off stuff on my way.

Deb, for my last move 5 years ago I DID us a lot of those Rubbermaid totes. They are especially good for stuff you won't be using or unpacking.

Thanks everyone for the hints!!

I've matched Joanna! I'm doing my 11th move since meeting my husband & our 20th meeting anniversary is this summer! We actually packed an entire 3 bedroom house in one day - the day after I graduated from B-School. I was so much younger than today.

Honeybunch, since you're not a packrat, it's much simpler. As the move nears, I go into camping mode. The bathroom & kitchen gets packed, & we just live as if we were camping with the basics. Those soup, cereal, polenta cups that you pour boiling water into are great to have around. I don't sweat the fat & we eat a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. Heck, moving is pretty darn physical! If anyone helps you, keep them fed! I feed the hired help too.

I use a lot of wrapping paper which is available at U-Haul as well as the less environmentally friendly bubble wrap. Label everything! Be fairly specific about what's in the box & where you want it to go in the new place.

I track address changes & confirmations on a spreadsheet. While losing contact with "Save the Whales" isn't a tragedy, you want to make sure that financial/insurance stuff gets updated. Review your check register, credit card statements, etc. It's harder to remember the ones that you only have annual or semi-annual contact with. I'm finding that I can do a lot of address changes by e-mail or websites. Free & quick is a good thing.

Now I'm off to follow my own advice. Good Luck!!

Debra

Now I'm SOOOOOO glad I don't have a lot of stuff to move, but that means a half empty house!!!! I'd previously condensed my belonging (except for clothes!) down to what would fit into an efficiency apartment. I don't get into knick knacks AT ALL, or a lot of books. I long ago decided I didn't need books, except for the ones I couldn't live without...mostly weightlifting books. The library has all the books I could ever want to read.

I will get an additional workout this summer with a bigger yard to mow!!!

My now workout area flooring arrived from Great Mats....I ordered it on Monday, and it came on Wednesday!!! It's very light, not heavy like the Stall mats we were talking about. They came in a bulky big box.

Thanks all for the hints!!!!

Got the keys on Wednesday....

....and started to take in stuff yesterday. I filled up a couple of laundry baskets with books, and some Rubbermaid totes with videos and dropped them off on the way to work. Then on the way home, I put books & videos on bookshelves, and took home the empty baskets & totes to re-fill. How cool was that?! I have a small bedroom that has floor to ceiling bookshelves built-in on one whole wall.

For an in-town move, this is a GREAT way to do it!!!! It's never fun, but it CAN be less painful. I hate boxes stacked everywhere that have to be unpacked. :D:D:D

Hey HB!

I bookshelf from the floor to the ceiling??? Will that be enough shelves for all your videos? :7 Have you unpacked your new mats in your exercise area? I bet you are excited to try your vids in your new room. Can't wait to see how you set it all up. Let me know if you need any extra hands. Your-Friend-In-Fitness, DebbieH :)

RE: Hey HB!

I just put together the big red puzzle that is my workout mat and did some HiLo moves on it to see if it shifted, and it didn't. It's very light and cushiony, and it seems like my feet won't catch on it like carpet. So far so good. Can't wait to have you see it!!!
