Social Groups?

What are the Social Groups about? We have the "Check-In & Challenges", so can you give me a few examples on how to use this?

They're a place to get off the public forums and into a smaller group, where you have more of a private place to interact with the members of the group. You can still access them if the group owner makes the group "public", but you have to go through a few more steps to find the group. I'm very much enjoying the one I'm in.
