So?? Anyone have the Kindle?

I can't believe I didn't even know about this until about a month ago. Now I'm hearing about it everywhere and I saw one last night on the subway. I just want to actually hold one in my hands before I buy it. I'm betting my SIL will have one, and I'll be seeing her tonight. She's a veracious reader. If you have it, spill it! What do you think??

I don't know about the Kindle, but MIL got DD an Astek EZ Reader (Hanlin V3). I would have told her to get the Kindle, but she read online how much easier the Astek is on your eyes and the buttons are less annoying.

One of the major complaints with Kindle is accidentally flipping pages due to the button placement. The one she got is similarly priced to the Kindle.

Also, the Kindle has limited file compatibility. This thing will read word docs, pdfs, etc.

I wasn't buying him one because I am annoyed that Amazon charges $10 for books when there is no printing, storage or shipping costs. Seems like the "books" should be cheaper. And prob will be when there is real competition.

Anyway, I'll let you know how this one is when I bring it back to him next week. I'm very curious to see myself how they work.

I have it, Nancy. I like it. I still read standard hard copies of books, but I like the versatility of being able to carry multiple titles in a slim device. This is ideal for me with travel and with work. Have had no trouble with pages turning on me. I will say, though, that I do consider it a luxury item, not really a NEED. But it's very cool.

I thought a book already was a wireless reading device...;)

It is Gayle, but you have to find something to do with a book when you're done with it. It takes up room on a book shelf, or winds up in the trash. Also, books are weighty to carry around. But, probably best of all, with the Kindle it appears that you can buy a new release hardcover book for $9.99! No more waiting around for it to come out in paperback so it's affordable and can fit in your purse.

I finally decided to order it and I was wait-listed! It will take 11-13 weeks to ship to me because Amazon is out of stock and they have a very long wait list! Surprising, especially in this economy. :(

I'd hope people are either donating their used books to a library or literacy program, or recycling them with other paper.;)

There aren't too many ways of donating here in the city that don't cost more than they're worth, but recycling is very big here. I just put my trash in the compacter room and the building staff organizes everything to be recycled. For paperbacks, though, recycling is a last resort. People pile up their paperbooks in the lobby, hoping their neighbors will take them, and often they do. I was going to try the book swapping website Christine recommended, but to not even have paper in the first place would be far more practical.

My brother has a Kindle version of his book: on amazon.com, look up Prairie Springs by L.R. Williamson. It explores diversity and is very entertaining! It is currently being reviewed by Bravo and several other outfits.

Shana, that is SO COOL!!! I'm going to have to buy your brother's book!

Nance, I've been eying the Kindle for a long time. I thought it might be nice to have when we go on trips. Every time I carry a book on a plane I end up regretting it. They're just plain cumbersome and heavy to cart around in a purse. OTOH, I don't know how practical the Kindle is if you're only planning to use it for travel. Maybe I'm just a romantic, but there's something cozy about curling up with a book and a cup of tea. Can you curl up with a Kindle? -- LOL!!

I'll be anxious to hear what you think about it. It seems like it would be a practical alternative to paper books for someone who lives in the city and rides the subway.

That's why I borrow most of the books I read from the library....they sit on the library shelf so that other people can enjoy them as well. I don't mind carrying them either. They are cheaper than Cathe's weighted vest and they strengthen my mind and my biceps ;) Any other books I don't want any more have made fine donations to library collections or book sales (and are easily recycled). The Kindle is specific only to Amazon products which is fine if you buy exclusively from Amazon. There is a Sony product as well. To me, they just seem frivilous and I'm not the least bit tempted, but if someone were o hand me one I am sure I could get some use out of it.
