Lizzy, is your signature automatically posted onto your posts? Mine is, and when I click on a smilie it is deposited at the end of my signature, not at the place where I click (does that make sense?) I have to then cut & paste it to where I want it to be. It also works to type in the smilie. I don't know the typing for some, but for the simple smilie you type a colon IMMEDIATELY followed by a parentheses (use the number 9 parentheses for a smile and the number 0 parentheses for a sad face). For the winking smilie, type a semicolon then a dash then a parentheses. Same thing with number 9 and number 0 -- you can make your winking face smiling or looking sad.
Also, when you're posting, look down at the bottom of the place where you type your post. There's a box that says "Check if you DO NOT wish to use emotion icons in your message." Perhaps that box has been checked accidentally -- make sure it's blank.
