Slimy Fingers in Cake Question

Okay now - all you loving mothers are probably going to jump all over me for this one, but I have to ask.

This friend of mine has a 2 year old grandson and he just had his birthday party over the weekend. She went up for the party and baked the cake. The grandson was sticking all four fingers in the batter, licking them and then sticking them back in and licking them again - and so it went. She decided she better not tell anyone at the party because they might not want to eat the cake - although it didn't bother her any.

Now I don't have kids and so this may be why this freaks me out (and probably why God decided I shouldn't have any - I couldn't handle it! - hehehe), but we have been taking a poll around our office and it doesn't seem to bother most people. Eeeeeewwww!!! If it were me, I would have kept his little hands out of a cake that was being made for a big group of people. "But it was his birthday," she says. Am I nuts? I'm sure I would lose some of my germophobic ways if I had kids - I mean, I'd have to. But to me that's just a little over the top. It seems I AM in the minority though - at least at work.

Any thoughts? I'm really looking for support here. :7

If Sophie wants batter, she can have a little bit off a clean spatula or spoon and it doesn't go back in the bowl. I mean, I know you bake it and everything, but that's kind of gross.

Yuck! I have a 2 yr old - I would not allow him to do that. If I were at a party and found out I was served cake that had little kid hands in it - I would be very grossed out! I am particular about germs though. My sister thought I was overvboard until she had her own kids!

I have four kids and they would never be allowed to do that. Bacteria will grow from the saliva. I don't know if cooking would destroy the bacteria or not, but I wouldn't take any chances. Plus, it's bad manners anyway and not something you want a child to get used to doing.

I am quite a germ-phobe, though!:)

EW. Yeah, that's kinda nasty. I also vote to set a little licking aside and not mess w/ the actual bowl full of batter.

I dunno about that. I'm not phased by my OWN kid's slimy fingers (unless they're really bad:p), but other people's? No thanks.

I have all boys, three of them... I know where their hands and fingers are! GROSS.... I am always telling them- go wash your hands! It's a no. ;-)

That depends. It it were either of my sons and their hands were clean and it was only going to be me, dh and the kids eating it then no, it wouldn't bother me (although Gabe should know better). But I'd never let them do that and serve the cake to others. YUK! And I wouldn't want to eat something that someone else's kids stuck their fingers in.

My dh's grandma always licks the spoon or tastes from the spoon when she is cooking. GROSS!!!

i agree on the differentiation. If it's only us involved w/ my 2 yo's sliminess, then whatever. If it's for others, then yeah, kinda yucky.

When my kids were that little and I was making a cake I used to give them a bowl with flour, sugar and cinnamon to play with while I made the real cake. When the cake batter was in the pans then the mixing bowl, beaters and spatula were fair game.....for the kids of course;-)

I agree with not being phased by my kids hands and fingers but other's...Yuk!

Anyone ever been to a shower when they are cutting the cake. Too often the cutter is licking fingers between serving pieces and then cutting another piece and licking and serving and serving and licking, bleeechhhhhhx(

Stand back. There is a microbiologist in the house. Probably any bacteria on the kids slimy fingers will be destroyed during baking. HOWEVER, cake batter has raw eggs in it. The child runs a real risk of getting Salmonella or some other kind of food poisoning. I do agree, however, that grandma should have had some kind of control over the little monster.

My kids get all irked that I don't let them lick the bowls after I'm done baking. Sometimes I'll let them have a little taste from the sides after I'm done but then I'll stick everything in the sink and clean it all out. It's mostly to brake my own bowl-licking habit but I don't want them to do it either.

I agree with buffettgirl (my ex was a microbiologist) the cooking would kill any germs in the cake. But, I would be more concerned about the possible effect of raw eggs on the child. Also, it would be a good time to teach a lesson about manners since the next time he wants to put his fingers in something that will be served to others and lick them, it might be something that could spread germs.

Just my 2 cents..btw...I have 4 kids and 2 grands and I wouldn't let them do it IF I caught them!
