Silly work question - need your opinion

This might seem like a silly post but I need your opinions, ladies.

I am in the process of moving right now. I really want to bring my 20 gallon fishtank to work instead of to my new apartment. I am an attorney and I have my own office and there is plenty of space for it. It is taller than your average 20 gallon tank and was perfectly designed for apartment living! I keep it very clean and it would be a great addition to make my office more like "home." Plus, it is so relaxing for me!

Do I ask the people I work for first? And if I do, is this asking too much? We are a small firm and we are all very close. We go to each others weddings, showers, etc., and it is like a small family here. (It's not a stuffy 200 person firm.) For some reason, I feel funny approaching this one.

What do you guys think?

Christine, what sounds silly to me is that you feel like you're all a small family, yet you're hesitant to ask. Go for it and explain the situation. A lot of offices have fish tanks.

Good luck.
:)

If it were me I'd just bring it in. You have your own office, you should be able to decorate it as you please. I can't imagine a fish tank would offend anyone. :)

I think it's a great idea. I love watching fish in the big aquariums. I think you might want to approach them first since you all are close and also mention that fact that you keep it cleaned. I don't see why they would have a problem. Let us know and of course, we want to see pix after you move it there!!!

It never hurts to ask the people you work for. They probably don't own their own office space (I could be wrong), so there might even be restrictions on what you are allowed to do with your work space.

I wouldn't feel strange asking them, however. It's not a crazy or unreasonable request.

I would think the only concern might be if there are structural or electrical issues from the weight and such. And if you feel uncomfortable, maybe you can approach it as a humorous email type of thing, like, WELCOME NEW HIRE! or something like that. But I think it should be fine and I would bet a great conversation piece in the office. You might find you now have too many visitors! :)

Good luck,
Marie

Marie that is so cute! It reminds me of when our animal control officer submitted an employee evaluation for his dog (she chases ducks away from ponds & yes, this is a typical thing for NJ towns). She got a perfect score on her review. :p

Out of common courtesy, I would ask first, or in the very least mention that you're thinking of it and would anybody mind.

I also work in a small, very close knit office and I would also mention something like this to my co-workers before just doing it - and I'm even the supervisor!

I agree that you will have to do the cleaning, and the feeding, etc. yourself.

And definitely ask first.
