Silly question about water breaking...

Hi.

Okay...this may sound dumb but I'm gonna ask anyway...

What is the difference in the feeling when your water breaks as compared to say losing control and peeing a little (or a lot)? I ask because every once in a while I find that I will "leak" pee because the pressure on my bladder is so intense and I just don't have time to get to the bathroom. I also know that when one's water breaks it doesn't HAVE to be this giant gush...it too could be a "slow leak"...so how do you know the difference???

When my water broke I actually thought that I did pee my pants. LOL In my experience, it wasn't a gush but it was more then I would normally pee. It continued to leak for several hours but you can't stop it with your muscles like when you are urinating. It is hard to explain but when it does happen you WILL know.

With my first, I had my water broken since I was being induced. The first one, I felt gush when the doctor broke it. With my second one, I didn't even know the water broke! LOL I just woke up at 12:30 am having to pee and saw some blood on the toilet paper. I ignored it a bit because it wasn't a big deal. Old blood, you know. Went back to bed, an hour later, had to pee again, saw blood again, ignored it again and went back to sleep. Couldn't sleep at all since the second time I woke up. Had contractions starting at around almost 4 am. Had the baby at 6:31 am. If you can, I mean if you have no health problems and the baby doesn't have a problem, TRY, I mean TRY not to be induced. You'd be in a lot of pain as being induced the contractions are ALL over your ab area. With my second, I had him all natural and it wasn't bad AT ALL. Contractions was paradise compared to the first one as it was different. If you plan on having epidural, then ignore the plea of mine. LOL :p

This is not a silly question at all, Wendy! I think it's quite reasonable, actually. When my water broke, my first thought was that I was peeing my pants, but when I attempted to stop the flow I was completely unable to. And since my water broke with the stereotypical gush, the quantity of fluid exiting my body quickly indicated that this was not urine. Much of the water ended up on my bathroom floor and when I touched it and smelled it, it was completely clear and odorless, ah, like water.

Cheers,
Sandra

It was different for me each time. The first time, my water broke during a contraction and it felt just like someone just opened the falls of niagra! There was no stopping it! The second time it broke it between contractions, and it felt like uncontrolable peeing. The only difference is after this one I felt immediate pressure. I think I dropped in that half a milisecond my water broke! I had gushes, and I know some frieds who have had leaks. One girlfriend said she knew it was leaking because it was way thinner than discharge and it was a consistent dripping. YOU WILL KNOW! I promise! You will definately be able to tell when that bag breaks, gush or leak!

I always thought, "how could you not know?" But then of course it happened to me...in the hospital...as I was getting out of bed to go to the bathroom and I did think I might've lost control of my bladder. It was a gush of clear, odorless liquid. It wasn't too long after that the labor pains started and they kicked in pretty strong.

Thanks everyone...I guess I just have to keep in mind that if I can't stop it, it's my water...if I can...it's pee! lol :7

I am only really concerned because if I am one who's water breaks BEFORE contractions start, I will need to call my doc right away, where they say if your contractions start but your water hasn't broken, you may not need to contact your dr for a while depending on how fast you progress....

Diana, this isn't uncommon. I am sure every woman suspects it may be the rupture of membranes, but I have taken care of countless women who have had to seek medical confirmation. Sometimes it was urine, but sometimes is was amniotic fluid.

One of my friends experienced a VERY, VERY slow leak with her 4th pregnancy. Her 3 previous deliveries were scheduled c/s, so this was new to her. It was very small amounts of fluid, but I was pretty certain from the color that it was amniotic fluid. When the nurse first checked her, she THOUGHT it was urine. It WAS amniotic fluid though. If you aren't sure, there is no harm in seeking confirmation. :7

My case was funny. At 12:30a.m. I was in bed and heard the sound of something that exploded. "Puff". I couldn't believe it. I touch myself and nothing. Few minutes latter it was wet, just a little. I went to the bathroom and some water with blood came out, still not too much. Immediately called the doctor, 10 minutes latter the contractions started already 10 minutes appart to each other. So... my water didn't broke, it exploded. LOL

Wendy,
I was sure I would know the difference but didn't. The night before I had my daughter I felt like I wet myself but was not ready to think about having the baby yet, so I ignored and denied it. The next morning, I was still wetting myself but was sure this was all it was, I felt great and no contractions. I proceeded to work out to a firm video, going numerous times to the bathroom but my undies sure were wet. I finally took a shower and decided just to be sure , i'll call the doc. The doc had me come in immediately. I didn't even grab my hospital bag because i was sure it wasn't my water and still I felt great. Doc checked me and in fact it was a slow leak. I immediately went to the hospital and was induced. To sum it up, if you are unsure call your doctor.

I agree with all other posts...for me I woke up to an alarm and nugged my husband to turn it off and when I turned over a little liquid came out. I thought I may have peed, but it felt different. On my way to the bathroom I mentioned to my DH that I though my water broke and when I sat down it proceeded to gush. You should have seen DH jump out of bed that morning, makes me LOL when I think of how wide eyed and awake he was that morning. When it subsided a little bit I wrapped myself in towels outside of some clean pajamma pants. It continued to leak pretty much till we reached the hospital. I couldn't control the lead whatsoever.

Hi Wendy! It's hard to believe it's been a month since I had my baby. To answer your ?, my water actually broke right after I went pee. I got up to go pee at 5:00a.m., and when I was done, I noticed that fluid was still coming out-it didn't feel like I was peeing, though. This is gross just to warn you, but it has a sweet odor-unlike pee. Well, when I still wasn't sure, I noticed that every few minutes more would trickle out. That's how I knew.

Seems middle of the night pee breaks are prime time for one's water to break and goodness knows I am up for those breaks often enough! lol We'll have to see if the same holds true for me...

Hi Wendy, I am a mother of 2 17 and 10. With my first one 17 years ago I remember I was at the Dr and I had to go to the bathroom before I left and when I was going it just kept on coming out as I was getting up.

Now for the 2nd one I was in a dead sleep at 4:00am and it just gush out and woke me up just to tell you that is how powerful it came out. Well anyway good luck on your birth:)

So yesterday I thought my water may have broken because I seemed to be leaking SOMETHING on and off for hours...

BUT every time it would leak, I felt like I had to pee and I would! Plus when I noticed the leaking feeling I would be able to control it-or atleast I thought I was able to! lol It was when I was relaxed and not paying attention that it would happen.

In addition, I was very warm b/c as you know, preggies are always several degrees warmer than "normal" people. lol So through this pregnancy (this may sound gross-sorry) when I would get really warm, that area would be one of the first to sweat! So in addition to the leaky feeling I was probably sweating too which added to that feeling...therefore, I decided that my bladder was having a REALLY BAD DAY and that I was too warm and that my water did not break...I hope I was right!

Never had anything beyond my usual occasional, no pattern braxton hicks contractions the entire time, BTW.

ETA: I have also read that there is an increase in discharge at the end of pregnancy so I am thinking that was part of it too.

I go back to the doc tmrw...almost everyone I know thinks I am going to deliver early! OMG! lol

(Hope I didn't gross anyone out!)

Oooooh, Wendy! Did you drop? I had that feeling when DD dropped! I felt more pressure on my bladder, too. Urine, urine and more urine! It was everywhere! My poor undies!
Do you ever wonder where all that discharge actually come from? I used to wonder if I was even hydrated enough to produce so much pee and discharge.
Nothing like starting the day with a little mucus and urine!

Missy

Very interesting, Wendy. I have to agree with Missy that it sounds like Joey may have dropped and is putting increased pressure on your bladder. Maybe all that excess cervical fluid at the end of pregnancy is your body's way of providing lubrication to help baby slide out?

I just read on the TCYOF website that some people think it's possible to learn if you're about to deliver by taking your temp. There is some talk that your basal body temp, which has remained elevated since ovulation/conception, will take a big dive 24-48 hours before labour starts. I find that very interesting, and may start temping again near the end of this pregnancy, and see if they're right!

Cheers,
Sandra

I am actually hoping that my water does not break until I get to the hospitalso that I can spend more time laboring at home...if it breaks before I go into labor then I will have to go to the hospital right away...

Well, this is according to the nurse who taught the lamaze class anyway...she said jfk wants thier moms right away once the water breaks because of the increased risk of infection to the baby once the safety/protection of the bag is broken....

I'm going to ask my doc what he recommends when I go for my appointment tmrw but I would think since he uses that hospital that his instructions would be the same...I just want to double check...
