side of knee area -

Hi! all,
I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I just started doing spinning classes - love it. :)

Recently after spin, usually several hours later, I notice some discomfort on the outer side portion of the knee - ;( I know lousy description. I do not feel any discomfort during class, and none while walking. The only time I feel it will be walking up and down steps. By the next morning thankfully it's gone. :)

I plan to mention this to my doctor when I go for my next physical, but I was hoping maybe some of you had some idea what is going on.

BTW - I usually have the instructor check my bike setup, so I don't think it's form, unless I'm doing something wrong during class.x(

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have had that kind of pain before...but I only thought runners got it. And it would hurt when I ran. It was called Illiotibial Band Syndrome. (This band is on the outside of your leg from your ankle to your hip) Mostly pain can be caused from running too much too fast and on uneven surfaces. For runners the pain usually effects the outer knee area. I have no idea if you can get it from spinning??? Maybe check with the instructor and see what he/she says about the pain...:)

You might want to raise the seat a little. I've gotten that pain when my seat was a little too low. You want your knee to have only the slightest bend at the bottom of the rotation.

I am willing to bet that it is Iliotibial Band Syndrome. This can proceed to be horribly painful. The band gets to tight and begins grinding on the knee.

You can fix this but it will take consistancy. You need to start stretching your hips more, outer thighs...

Check out my Picture trail for some stretches that helped me get rid of ITB Syndrome. At one point, I was not able to run because the pain was so bad. Check out the "Hip Stretches". Do them before and after your spinning class and take your time doing them.

Thank you all for your informative and quick responses. I did have this once before, several years ago, when I was trying to become a runner. The pain then would last and not go away, for a couple of days, but again, only felt it when doing steps - which my house has a lot of since it's a split level.

I will check again with the instructor on my form, she has usually said that my knee is okay where it is or I could raise the seat one more notch. When doing this, it felt like I was hyper extending my knee.

Those strethes are great. I usually do not stretch before - no time but will make the time. Sometimes when I come home, I will pop in Cathe's stretch max and do the segment with the band - I love that one. Again time is sometimes the issue, but I will have to make it a point.

One more question for you guys - does this come from having tight hamstrings. I definately do, and am trying to work on that.

Again thank you so much for the info:+
