Shoulld I Try S&H Again.............

Hi Cathe,

I would really love your opinion on this. In September, I followed your August Boot Camp Rotation, and I absolutely loved everything about it--I felt great, was in great shape, my clothes fit nicely, felt very accomplished. In general, I really don't have weight to lose (I am 5'2 1/2 " , weigh 114, usually wear size 2) but I am looking to firm up and define my abs more, want to further define my upper body, want to further define my legs without having them bulk up at all. So those are my personal goals.

For October, I decided to try Slow and Heavy for the first time, along with cardio every day. In the early am I did 1 body part of S&H, and in the early afternoon I did an hour of cardio (1 hour run, or KPC, or an IMAX, or Lowmax). I did this for 10 days in a row (I usually don't take a rest day, so that was each body part on S&H twice b/c I didn't do S&H Legs at all b/c I don't want to bulk up my legs at all). Well, I didn't feel as good as I did the month prior with the Boot Camp Rotation! I felt like I was bulkier, larger, that the progress I had seen the previous month was dissapating. Do you think it was my imagination, or do you think there was something wrong with my rotation? Also, what do you think I should expect to see if I were to go back to this S&H rotation for a whole month, so I know if that is actually what I want to see!!

Thank you so much in advance for reading such a long-winded email, and for any advice you might be able to give me. You are the best!!!!

Melissa

RE: Should I Try S&H Again.............

I have never responded to anything in the Ask Cathe section before, and I want to make clear this is my opinion. But, since you seem to be about the same size as I am with similar fitness goals, I thought I'd let you know what I do.

I do a different strength series every week (one week Pure Strength, one week the Pyramids, one week Slow and Heavy, one week full body workouts, etc.) -- changing it up this way works against bulking. In fact, I change all my workouts (cardio too) up A LOT.

I also only work each body section (lower, upper) every five to seven days -- although if it's a split workout, upper body would get two days. [However, I often do both Pure Strength Upper Body on the same day.]

I work abs at least 5 times a week, again with LOTS of variety in workouts. I don't use as heavy a weight as Cathe does (often half the weight for the upper body), and I do include a leg workout each week (again with lower weights, between 22 and 30).

I haven't bulked at all using this kind of rotation. I am, though, probably more slender in the upper body than many would want to be. But, that could be solved by adding more weight than I do.
