shoulder training

Everytime I do any type of overhead presses my left shoulder "pops". It is not painful when it happens but it bothers me. I haven't been progressing much with shoulder training as I have been with the rest of my body because I am afraid of injuring myself. I am always very busy so I have not seen a physician about this. What might be causing this and what do you suggest I do about it?

Hi! Shoulders are probably the most easily injured muscle group of all of them. They also take a good little while to mend. It is really hard for me to answer your question without watching you do your exercise. While popping noises are common and can be nothing serious, when it comes to shoulders, I never like to mess around. I do suggest that you make it a point to have it checked out but in the meantime let me cover some things.

1) If you are noticing this popping more when you are using a barbell, I would switch to dumbells since you will be able to alter your arm positions more freely.

2) Be sure that during your exercise reps you are not locking out at the top of the movement(but you still need to use full range of motion).

3) When pressing the weight up over your head, be sure to have the weights in your line of vision. If you can't see those weights out of the corner of your eye at the top of the movement, you are sending them too far over your head. Try to keep them just slightly forward.

4) See if having your hands in a vertical position(so that your palms face one another as your arms go up)helps to prevent that popping noise.

Hope these suggestions help you but I still would have it looked at if it doesn't completely go away. Good Luck!
