Should I watch The Departed?

The Departed came to Movies-on-Demand. I know it won lots of awards and stuff, but I'm a little afraid of Martin Scorsese. I don't want to watch anything that will haunt me for weeks on end. A good drama is one thing; I just don't want to see anything deeply disturbing.

If you've seen it, what do you think? Should I watch it or not?

I haven't seen it, but my parents did and I know my mom found the level of violence in it very disturbing. It's funny you brought this up because DH and I were just "debating" watching this one tonight.

Thanks, Beth. An Unreasonable Man also came to MOD, and that got great reviews. I'm waiting for DH to come back from his business trip to watch that one, but it might be a good idea for you tonight.

I loved this movie-yes its very violent so Im not sure where your comfort leval is with these kinds of movies. I happen to love violent movies so it did not disturb me. Let us know what you decide!!

My husband and I enjoyed it,and it didn't haunt me. It was violent and I usually don't like that, but we did enjoy the movie. Cast is stellar and the plot is interesting.

Well, let's put it this way: blood, guts and gore won't haunt me if it's just a bunch of gangsters killing each other. But if any innocent people are, say, tortured or kidnapped, that type of thing would bother me. What do you say now?

Ellen, you sound like me, so I'm going to go with that recommendation. Also, I just read some reviews and it really sounds worthwhile. And wow!! Matt Damon AND Leonardo Dicaprio in the same movie! They are both so talented! :D
 
Nance - watch it. There's lots of violence, but no innocent people getting tortured, etc. I can't stand that either. It's incredibly compelling and the performances are all absolutely fantastic.

I watched it last night and didn't find it as violent as most of his films. It's an excellent story. I usually fall asleep 5 mins into a movie but I stayed awake the whole time for this - ok, I did have to close my eyes a little when it got violent, but there weren't that many violent scenes. I highly recomment it!

Oh, it's great...not haunting at all...not like Godfather! It is violent, but nothing too disturbing. It is good...and the men are so good looking.
 
I thought the Sopranos was bloody but because of the story line I went along with it. I don't know if you ever watched OZ on HBO,talk about giving me nightmears. LOL!!!! My husband picked out this movie not as bad as OZ like sopranos but way better story line. He fell asleep and I liked it. Hope this helped.
 
DH and I watched it last week and really liked it. It gets a little confusing towards the end as to who's on what side but the acting was great. Totally enjoyable.

Very twisted, great story. It is bloody, but tolerable. If you like Jack Nicholson you must watch it, he is just fantastic in the movie.
 
Funny you should mention, I watched the beginning of this movie last night and was drawn to the story; I love Scorcese, the Sopranos, the Godfather, all that Mafia stuff! But I deliberately chose to stop watching about 20 minutes or so into it last night because I didn't want the violent images to creep into my dreams. (Plus the movie is two and a half hours long and I had to get up early!)

I will definitely watch the whole thing, just not right before I try to go to sleep! :eek:
And I agree, what I've seen of the performances so far was amazing. Who'd have thunk a few years ago that I'd be a huge Leo DiCaprio fan, but I am. He's really turned out to be a terrific actor.
