Should I replace my shoes?

The shoes I currently use for working out (step, hi/lo, kb, weights, and yes I am ashamed to admit...running) are 2 years old. I bought them, got preg and barfed for 3 mo. and then lost the baby. So there's 3 mo. of no use. Then about 9 mo. later I got preg again and barfed for another 3 mo. I didn't get back into working out until I was about 6 mo. along. So we have a total of 9 mo. of no use. And of course after I had the baby there was about 6 weeks of no use. They feel fine, look brand new, and I don't have problems except that my knees have been bothering me lately. I'm wondering if it could be my shoes. Or maybe the fact that I had a baby 6 mo. ago :-hmmm The shoes are Nike something or others. Sorry for rambling :-shy

Andrea,
You have GOT to replace them! I replace my running shoes every 500 miles and my aerobics shoes every 6 months. Worn down shoes can potentially sideline even the best of exercisers and it's amazing what injuries can result from improper footwear. It isn't necessarily the feet which go. It can be the lower leg, the groin, the back, and all because of those tootsies. So, love your feet and invest in some new shoes!

I would get some new shoes if I were you, especially if your knees are bothering you. Make sure they are suitable for the activity you do--running shoes are different than those you wear for aerobics. I do think your knee problems might be related to your pregnancy-pregnancies. The hip bones widen for giving birth, which may change the knee alignment. I also remember that almost exactly 6 months after my first son was born, my knee went out on me. The ob-gyn said it was related to the estrogen level--that all the joints are a bit looser after pregnancy.

Yes, Get new shoes!!!!! I workout a lot, and I only wear my shoes for about 2-3 months. I date them with a sharpie so I can keep track of it. Of course, I have a closet full of old shoes that look like new. But I want my knees and hips and back when I'm 80!!!

Okay, now another question

Okay, I'm on a shoe search. Are cross trainers the shoes to get? I am having a hard time (on the net) finding shoes for aerobics only. I live 100 miles from the nearest store so I am hoping to be prepared or even do mail order. Thanks!

RE: Old shoes

Hey Kim...
Just an idea....I started giving my old shoes to women's shelters. They really, really, REALLY need and appreciate them. I keep one or two old pairs around as spares, but when you replace them every 4 months or so, they do so pile up.

And Bobbi, I think we all agree you gotta ditch those shoes. That's how I know mine are ready to go, when I notice sore feet. It is almost always 4-5 months of regular use. The more high impact you do, the quicker they go. Definitely try not to wear them longer than 8 months. You will feel like you grew springs in your feet, I promise. :-jumpy

RE: Okay, now another question

Hi Andrea,

I wear cross-trainers but I'm not a stepping queen. Cross-trainers has become a huge category with sub-groups. Make sure you get the type with a gym fitness emphasis so you get lateral support with some flexability for cardio.

Believe it or not, www.roadrunnersports.com has a pretty good line of cross-trainers. I guess runners have to hit the weight room too! LLBean also has fitness shoes. They were carrying some of New Balance's line, but that might have changed.

RE: Okay, now another question

Andrea, I just bought Avia's and I like them alot! Check out their website(http://www.avia.com). It gives a description of each shoe. I bought shoes described as instructor level shoes and they are great!

RE: Okay, now another question

Kristina,
What a great idea, donating old shoes to women's shelters! I am a shoeaholic and get rid of mine when they still LOOK good even if I've put 500 miles or 6 months of aerobics on them. I am donating mine from now on!

RE: Okay, now another question

I believe LL Bean still carries them...think I saw their catalog just the other day and since I order everything through the mail noticed they had good running shoes...something I am in the market for as well. I won't tell you how long I have had mine ladies...you will run screaming into the woods!!!

Shoe source

I just discovered a site called penniesonthedollar.com, where all Avia shoes they have in stock are only $19.99. They have a limited number of styles (I got the last 2 pair in my size of one style), but if you find something you like, it's a great deal (and FREE shipping!). (I wrote this same message yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared...unless I put it in another thread).

KATHRYN!!!!!!

Found the site...but which Avia's do I want? What kind did you get? The descriptions don't tell much. I just ordered some Nikes JCPenney clearance for $40.00, but I don't mind stocking up! Help me!

RE: Okay, now another question

Andrea,

If you compare shoe numbers at both sites, you can figure out what's what. The 1800 shoe is a crosstrainer, the 600 shoe is an aerobics shoe, the 2000 shoe is a runner. If you do alot of hi impact, I'd get the 644. If you favor lower impact or weight training, the 1800 shoe, (can't remember the exact number). Or order one of each at $19.99 including shipping, they are very affordable!! What a great site!!

RE: KATHRYN!!!!!!

Andrea,
I'm not sure which style you'd most like. I've had Avias before and liked the fit, so I just looked for a style that was non-leather (I'm vegan) and that looked nice (I got the last two pair in my size). Since shipping and handling is free, I can always return them and pay only return shipping if I really don't like them (but they're bound to be good for something at that price!)
