Shoes

Hey all you fitness buffs! I've been thinking about shoes. Regarding aerobic shoes which ones do you consider the best? I have high arches (with a collasped left arch) and I wear orthotics in my running shoes but usually find them uncomfortable in my workout shoes. I like high impact aerobics and work out on a hard surface. Which shoes do you consider the best for aerobic and step type workouts?
I'd love to hear from all of you!

Hi Bobbi,
I think Ryka is a good brand, and that is what Cathe uses (or at least they did!). It is important not to use running shoes for step, just in case you didn't know. I'm afraid I can't help you on your arches, though! I usually use cross trainers vs. "aerobic" shoes, simply because they usually have more style.
I would be interested on someone else's opinion on this, though, since I am not an expert! :)

Hello, just wanted to say that I too have high arches and I usually buy Nike cross-trainers with good cushioning (I can't remember what "name", but if you want I can let you know Monday - when I come back to my computer) for aerobics, tennis and walking (extra cushioning in the heel because I am a heel-hitter) and New Balance "Off Road" running shoes (light gray with dark yellow 0.6 ounces??). I have tried Reebok and found that they fall apart or lose their shape (one pair actually stretched) after about 4 - 6 months of 5 day a week or more activity. My husband swears by Saucony, but I haven't tried them yet. Hope this helps.

Bobbi,

I have tried lots of different aerobic shoes and because of low arches and some other structural foot problems, I have to have really good shoes.

Ryka Evolutions have worked the best for me for aerobics because they have more cushioning in the forefoot than any other shoe I have tried. I wear orthotics in my aerobic shoes, but not in my running shoes.

Good Luck

Tina

Everyone is different as to brands...I have big, WIDE feet and have never been able to wear Rykas, but my girlfriend just loves 'em. I personally have had wonderful luck with Reebock's aerobic shoe line.
Go to an athletic shoe place and try on one of everthing. Wear your workout socks! Really jump around in them and do some side-lateral moves. Oh, I guess I should say try on one aerobic and one cross-train of each BRAND. They cost enough, take your time. The aerobic shoes tend to have more lateral support than cross-trainers, so if you have weak ankles and/or do a lot of turning, twisting, sidewise stuff, really think about these.
Cross-trainers are more economical if you..well, cross train! However, for me, cross-trainers do not have enough lateral support and tend to feel heavy. Also, I faithfully buy the shock-absorption inserts and take out the ones that come with the shoe. Then when my shoes supports wear out in 6 months, I put the original inserts back in and donate them to charity. Since they only get worn to the gym, they still look like new.

OK, another port heard from. Good luck!

Kristina's idea is a very good one. I actually ran through the sporting goods store when I was trying to find a good running shoe. I got some really strange looks and even laughed at a bit, but I didn't end up with an overly expensive shoe that felt uncomfortable either! : )

Part of the trouble is that sometimes the people who work at the shoe places don't seem to know all that much about shoes. I know alot about running shoes because of Runner's World and Road Runner Sports. For instance, there are three types of running shoes: stability, cushioned and motion control. I haven't had much success finding out about workout shoes. Websites don't give detailed info and I also have structural problems with my feet so I don't want to kill my poor feet and legs with the wrong shoe. And what about crosstrainers! I do know I want cushioning and stability but where do I find that info?

I have used a New Balance Crosstrainer and I swear by New Balance for running shoes. They really suit my feet. I also have Ryka Re-Evolution but my right foot slips out and both the shoes have seen better days!

I also tend to overthink things as you might have guessed! :)

Just curious...why won't running shoes work for step? I just bought a pair of Nike Air's that feel really good. The cross-trainers were way too narrow for me. I felt that a running shoe would make more sence anyway.

We learn something new everyday :)

I know this isn't going to help you too much, but here it goes. I have read Runner's World and all of the fitness magazine's reports on the best shoes and ,because I am a pessimist, think that it is just better to try the shoes out myself. How do the people doing the reports know what type of arch, foot width, ect. you are...how can they tell you what would be best for you?
I have scoliosis and used to have to go to a professional shoe store to get my shoes, and they know a lot about feet and shoes, but are usually very, very expensive. Another way to find out may be to go to a foot doctor, which can also cost a pretty penny.
You are right about shoe salesmen not knowing much about the shoes. Unless they use them, they usually don't have a clue. Your best bet would be to try the above options or find an exerciser who has the same arch, shoe size, weighs about the same as you, knows if she is a heavy heel hitter or lands solidly on the center of their foot (sounds wierd, but my husband and I run/walk differently), etc. I can tell you what shoes I use if you think that would help. I am 27 yrs. old, 130-135 lbs., wear a size 6 1/2 shoe and am a heavy heel hitter with a high arch/narrow foot. Just let me know. : ) Good luck otherwise!!

Thanks for all the great advice! I have just ordered a pair of Avia Aerobics shoes which they described as "instructor level". I have never worn Avia's so I am excited to try a new brand! I agree that shoe buying is such an individual thing. It's all a crap shoot. I also love to order off the internet. I hate going shopping for athletic shoes! I'll let you know how I like the Avia's. Thanks again!
