Shin Splints

Good Morning !!! I've been running consisently for about 7-8 weeks 3 days a week. Somedays I will run and others I walk on an incline or sometimes do sprints.Anyway last week my shins began to hurt so I purchased some new sneakers thinking that was the problem but when I started my cardio yesterday with the new sneakers on the treadmill I started a slow pace run 2 minutes into it my shins were burning! I had to stop and walk. Why is this happening and what should I do? I would hate to stop running!

Do whatever you have to to keep from getting shin splints. They are NASTY. I had a really bad case after a hiking trip once, and it took nearly three weeks to get over them.

My advice would be to rest until the pain goes away. Then really make sure you're warmed up all the way when you work out. Wear high-quality shoes. You might have to wrap your lower legs if it's a recurring problem. Oh, and watch your stride. Try altering it - maybe shorter, maybe watch how your feet are coming down - and see what feels more comfortable.

Good luck!

If it's a bad pain, I'd go see your doctor first, and see what he/she says. Otherwise, just try the elliptical and see how it feels. If you feel any strain, I'd give it a complete rest, because even if it doesn't hurt a lot, you're still stressing damaged muscles and they'll just take longer to heal.

I am a new runner and I got a shin splint so bad that I couldn't do anything for 8 days and after that it still hurt.

Someone on the forum suggested wrapping the legs. I have done this and I have not had a shin splint. I did it mostly to heal the one that I had.

Good luck with that. I also read the strengthen the shin you should walk around on your tippy toes.
