Serzone: do you know?

Hi everyone:

My doctor has prescribed an older type anti-depressant for me (because my body chemistry cannot tolerate the SSRI's) called SERZONE.

Have any of you ever taken it or currently take it? Did or do you ever experience nasty side effects? Did they last long? Were they serious enough for you to abandon use of the drug? What dosage are you currently on and how well have you tolerated the drug long term?

Basically, if you have taken it, what has been your experience of it?

Thanks for all comments and personal testimonies in advance. And if anyone feels uncomfortable dealing with this online and would like to email me their response privately, please do, I would welcome your messages.

Clare :)

I'm a pharmacist, and could not resist replying to your e-mail. Serzone isn't an old drug, it's been around for about 5 years now. Serzone (nefazodone) is in an antidepressant class of it's own--so it's not an SSRI, MAO inhibitor, or a TCA. It's well tolerated, drowsiness is the most common side effect. It has been removed from the market in Europe due to liver failure in several patients. It has NOT been removed from the market in the US as of yet, but I have a feeling that it may be a matter of time. Symptoms of liver dysfunction: yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine & abdominal pains. Let your dr know if you experience any of these symptoms.

Guess what I saw when I came to work today? Generic Serzone. It's just been released & today is the first day it's for sale here in MN. I felt just awful, since I stated there was no generic! It must be a little older than I thought (about 7 years old). Just wanted to clarify.

With Paxil, I took half a tablet for 3 days, felt tired and sluggish for those three, at the end of which I found the fourth day that I could not walk in a straight line and felt terrible, went to bed with headaches and threw up for 24 hours.

With Lexapro, it took only 6 hours for the above symptoms to kick in, another 24 hours throwing up.

With Zoloft, I was a total air head for 3 days, then felt out of control of my body just walking around, stopped taking it.

Took Celexa and did well with it for 6 months. Came off it after fight with my PCP. Took it again a year later, but spent the whole night unable to sleep as it sent horrible waves through my head, pinning me to the sheets like some kind of nightmare. Didn't sleep all night, and you couldn't pay me enough money to ever take that drug ever again.

It has not been a happy experience!!!

Thanks for the info.

The fact that they took it off the European market makes me panic like crazy. I respect the Europeans. I am one!

I had a Dr give this to help with my migraines. I really did not take it long in all fairness. I hate pills. He told me not to stop, but after two weeks of feeling really tired and groggy I quit. It affected my workouts. I think the pills are still lurking in the cupboard.

I worked with a woman that took that particular med in 1997 and it'd just come out then I think. So, I guess, it's about 6 years old not that ancient really.

She did well on it.
