Sclink vs. Thuck

I am disappointed. I went into Walmart to buy 25# weights. I picked them up and was all excited and then I set them back for a minute and they went 'thuck'. I then picked up two and bumped them together and they went 'thup'!!! Thup! Thuck! When I set those bad boys down I want them to sing "Schlingk!" like at the gym - not "thuck" Where do I go to buy "Schlingk"? Or should I just get over this little bit of weirdness and shell out the money for something that says "Thuck" when I'm done with it.

Does anyone else out there know what I'm talking about and share my sound 'sensibilities'?

LOL... Trish, that just kills me!! Now when I go get my barbell set this afternoon at Dick's, I'll be over by the dumbbells hitting them together!!

I didn't think it was possible for anything that heavy to go "Schlingk!" That is a sound you'd be more likely to hear from 5-lb dumbbells. But if you say the gym dumbbells go "Schlingk", then I guess it's possible. From a strictly metallurgical point of view (since I AM a metallurgist), the difference in sound can be attributed to a number of variables - the alloy the dumbbell is made of (pure iron, or a mild steel?), whether the dumbbell is coated with something (a clearcoat, neoprene, or nothing?), whether the steel has been heat-treated (I doubt any dumbbells are heat-treated, but you never know), the shape of the dumbbells (does it have really bulky ends and a skinny handle, or is the weight evenly distributed?)... there are probably more things, but basically - if you want the schlingk, you may have to shop around and test them out. Gyms usually buy high-end equipment, so go to a store that sells just fitness equipment.

It don't mean a thingk if you ain't got that schlingk! ;)

As random as this question first appears to be, I think I know what you're talking about. But my experience is with my barbells. I have one that I got from Walmart that is coated in some type of plastic. That set always goes thuck. I also have another barbell that is made out of metal with metal plates & metal clasps & it always goes schlink when I set it down. Personally I prefer the Thuck. It's not as high pitch as the schlink.

I don't have a good ear for these type of things and I was just as happy before I did it as I was after. My 12 pounders which are wrapped in neoprene did have much to say at all.
