School Open for 4 days

Instead of 5 days. That is what the schools are thinking about doing in my county here in Virginia due to high gas prices. Extending hours to 5pm and letting the children have off an extra day to save on gas for one day.

That is interesting! When will they decide on that? Nothing like that is being considered here in Illinois, at least not that I know of.

My DD mentioned it to me. The guidance counselor and a teacher had mentioned it to my DD friend.
It doesn't matter to me either way, if it happens or not. I think my children will need more money though for afternoon snacks, etc. I think it might be burdensome for those who like to do after school activities. Maybe great for the mom and dad who get off of work at that time and will no longer need babysitters.

Yeah, but what about the parents who have to then drive them to babysitter/daycare on that Friday that they are "supposed to be saving gas"? I live in Az and I haven't heard anything like that , YET. I wonder who pays for the gas when cops/bus drivers/mailmen get gas?

Couldn't help it! :D

I am a stay at home mom too. I walk my kids to school everyday(I can do that this year) and it has been great so far. We'll see what happens when it gets cold out and there is snow. ;-)

I have one in 7th one in 4th and one in 1st. Caleb is junior high, Sarah is elementary and Isaac is in the elementary autistic program. They only offer this program at certain schools and they put the 1st-3rd graders in the same class. The only thing I do not like about that is they pick up other kids' behavior (which is normal), but w/ the autistic kids it's worse. As long as he doesn't pick up the biting/scratching/pushing of other people, I'm fine.:)

Do they just go up to the pump w/ their "city gas card"? LOL. I saw a bus driver filling up this morning and I asked her how much it took and she said she couldn't tell me.

If I were a kid I think I'd like that...the 3 day weekend has always appealed to me. As an adult I had always thought working a 4 day work week, 10 hours per day and having a 3 day weekend would be better than working 5 eight hour days too.

You have a point there. That wouldn't make much sense unless the parent's jobs were changed to a 4 day work week as well...

I live in FL. Right on the AL FL line, and they are out of diesel. They said they only have enough for 7 more days. Then they are closing the whole county's school system down. WTH am I supposed to do with my kids? I am in college and my DH works. Am I supposed to take them with me? This is very frustrating for the whole nation. Whatever they decide though, I am not going to complain about it. There are people with severe things to complain about. So I will sit here very thankful I am ok, my family's ok, and my belongings are ok.

Wow Carla...I would think it would be better to leave school open for those kids who can manage to get thier w/o the buses. Atleast then parents have the option of driving thier kids to school! It's better than taking them to work with them!!! I hope things turn around for your area! :)

Wow. They had an article in our local paper last week that it is costing the school system almost exactly twice the $ for gas as last year. They said it was so difficult to figure out a budget anymore. I know one thing I am DYING with these gas prices. Ds has band prac. everyday and needs to be picked up. I live 20 mi from the school. Dh drives 90 miles round trip to work every day. Marnie

I live out in the boonies. Everything is far away except for the schools and a few grocery stores. We have just the bare necessities out here. It cost me $9 to fill up the gas can just so I could mow. Usually use to cost $3.50.

>South Carolina is talking of outright closing schools or else
>maybe going to T-TH 8am-6pm schedule.

Wow! This seems really extreme! Can't parents carpool so no one has to drive everyday, even if the buses can't run? Doesn't seem like it will save working parents any money, to have to put their kids in daycare/babysitting two days a week.
