Sleepers.
This movie came out in 1996, but I never saw it. Just did Saturday night on Starz. Starred Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Bacon, and a host of outstanding supporting actors.
The story was about four boys who grew up best friends (inseparable) in Hell's Kitchen (a cultural melting pot in 1950's/60's New York). A bad turn of fate landed them in a boys correctional facility, and the rest of the story was just mind-numbing. The scene which transitioned the setting from the boys' childhood into their adult lives couldn't have been acted better and couldn't have been more riveting. Billy Crudup was the movie's secret weapon, really bringing it to life for me.
Anyhoo, the movie isn't for the faint of heart, and the author of the book of the same name claims that all events are true, although names, dates, locations, and timelines have been altered to protect the identities of those involved.
