Saw a Good Movie Over the Weekend

Sleepers.

This movie came out in 1996, but I never saw it. Just did Saturday night on Starz. Starred Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Bacon, and a host of outstanding supporting actors.

The story was about four boys who grew up best friends (inseparable) in Hell's Kitchen (a cultural melting pot in 1950's/60's New York). A bad turn of fate landed them in a boys correctional facility, and the rest of the story was just mind-numbing. The scene which transitioned the setting from the boys' childhood into their adult lives couldn't have been acted better and couldn't have been more riveting. Billy Crudup was the movie's secret weapon, really bringing it to life for me.

Anyhoo, the movie isn't for the faint of heart, and the author of the book of the same name claims that all events are true, although names, dates, locations, and timelines have been altered to protect the identities of those involved.

oh man!! that movie broke my heart! It was really hard to watch. I haven't seen it in years and don't think I will again. It was very well done, it was just too sad to see again.

I saw this when it first came out and it haunted me for days. I've avoided movies like this ever sense. It just made me sick to see what these boys went through and I was physically and emotionally sick for quite a while after seeing this. I just found it awful. I can't take this kind of stuff.

The movie is called "Sleepers".... it IS a haunting story, isn't it?

I actually read the book and it is even more of an emotional drain. Way more detail than the movie on what happened to them.

I can't say for sure, but I believe that the author of the book says it was based on true circumstances.

DeNiro is excellent in his role as the priest... his performance didn't get the kudos it deserved, imho. That scene where the boys are telling him about what happened and they show only his eyes, man it gets me just thinking about it.

I seen this movie and it disturbed me big time. I can't believe Kevin Bacon played the part he played in that movie. Changed my viewing of him ever since.

Yes, this was a disturbing movie, but the story was so well portrayed. You just wanted to hate Kevin Bacon for the role he played. I hope people weren't too harsh on him (Kevin). You know how some people can't distinguish the actor from the role. It's a testament to his abilities as an actor when you walk away from the film hating him.

It's a movie worth seeing once, but it's hard to watch it a second time. Although I may have to watch it again to catch all the stuff I missed because I was so dumbfounded, which caused me to miss a lot of important details.
