you said you do three total body workouts a week as well as run 4-6 days a week. do you run first and then do your total body workout or do you split them up in the day,say one in the morning and one in the night? Do your legs ever feel burned out from all of that? some days my legs just seem to feel so heavy with my runs. one day I might run 7 miles and then later just 4miles and I feel better on the 7mile run than I do on the 4miles(different days of course) any suggestions on preventing that? I have a race next saturday and I really want to feel good doing it.

Really not Sarah, clearly, but if you're running on heavy legs that generally means they want a break. With a race coming up on Saturday, I'd take it easy this week and not run Thursday or Friday for sure, and only run on Wednesday if you feel you must, going only about half the distance you're used to running midweek. Rest up for that race!!

*backs out of thread now, hoping you don't mind I butted in...*

thanks, my legs feel like sometimes even after a day in between doing nothing. maybe their telling me that one day break wasnt enough. I dont mind the suggestions. thanks again

Not Sarah either...duh..:)...give your legs a 2 day rest before a race...especially if they feel heavy...:)

I agree with the ladies. Also, you may need to slow down a 1-2 of your training runs. Also, a nutritious diet and adequate sleep is critical once you start hitting higher mileage. As for my weight training, I always go lighter on lower body...never my full potential for leg work. I do enough to "burn" not "exhaust".

Is your race the 1/2 marathon?? What day is it?

I just had to pipe in here and say I WISH I WAS SARAH! I want that body! I know, I know, keep working on it. :)

Okay - I think you've received all of the right answers. But I just thought I'd say that when I used to run, my legs would feel heavy if I was overtraining. And the same now that I do cycling. If I'm overtraining (which for some reason I tend to do), my legs will feel tired every time I ride from the minuted I leave my house - even if I've taken a day off in between. My DH, who is very fast on the bike, believes that during the cycling season, I should only be lifting legs once a week. I'm not sure I can do that, but he is obviously doing something right!

this weekend is jsut a 5k but next month I have a 1/2 and in may also. I did 8miles yesterday, didnt feel my best but managed to pull thru. I have been running only 3-4days a week but doing bootcamp also. I am hoping to drop my times on these races so I hate to back off on my runs. how do you get better times?you have to work harder to achieve them ,am I right?

Hi Laura,

To improve your times, speed work does great! I'd do a speed work session once a week.

As far as how you have been "feeling" during your runs, a lot of it very well could be mental. Running distance takes so much mental...I truely believe that, and I think the mental aspect is far under rated. There are some books out there that can help with mental training.

The other thing I am thinking about is your pre run and post run meals. Are you eating right after your runs and is it quality? How about fuel and hydration during your runs? You may want to consider sipping Gatorade (or the like) before, during and after your longer workouts.

There is a lot more to running than most people think. I am currently training for my 1st marathon. I think many belive that involves just going out and running...NOPE! Way more science involved!

Ditto on the science involved in running that Sarah mentioned. And I'm still fine tuning after years spent doing it! But it's so much FUN!

i think I mentally mess myself up on races, even the little ones. I get nervous before they start , better after I start running in them but never have I felt good during a race, never. I have good long runs at times but never on race day. I ate a 200calorie protein bar before my run. I drank some water but not much. Next time I will try gatorade. my friend said to do half water, half gatorade during the long runs, plus a gel. I used a gel yesterday and I definately think that helped get me thru to the end. My friends also threw six hills at me yesterday, I am not use to doing hills very often, and two of them where big ones. but I did them, better than I had before. I am generally not hungry after a run, I usually dont eat for at least 45 minutes or so later. I am trying to get up to 26miles a week in, but this week is a down week. I have been doing sprints 1x week around the track at our ymca but this week I am counting the race as my speed work. so I should try to go slower on my other runs except my speed run? I have a tendency to start off slow and next thing I know I am going fast. Its hard to slow down.
