Salt-N-Peppa Hair HELP!

Aquajock

Cathlete
Hi, all! The Aquajock had another moment of truth with her mirror last night (hubby must've changed the light bulbs to ones that, like, work), and saw far more silver than she is emotionally prepared to accept.

Salon colorings also cost more than The Aquajock can emotionally tolerate, thus she would like to solicit opinions from The Cathe Crowd as to good over-the-counter hair coloring brands for a medium brunette. Got lotsa thick hair that otherwise is in good shape.

Any input would be mucho appreciado.

Thanks!

Annette

I have never found a decent brand, but have been afraid to experiment much. I was quickly frightened into the clutches of the salon people by attempts to fool mother nature. The only thing worse than gray hair is a tacky looking color job. I just went to a salon and bit the bullet from age 35 to 42 or so, then I had to give up and leave it gray. Be careful!! Don't do anything permanent, stick to the semi-permanent, that's for sure. And know when to quit. Ask a lot of your friends for honest feedback.

Hi Annette!

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I just can't see (or afford) spending eighty to ninety dollars for a professional cut and color. So I compromise and spend the extra money for a good cut, but color myself at home. I've tried many different brands and I was recently very pleased with Revlon's new High Dimension hair color. The color is very rich, nicely high-lighted, AND (here's the best part as far as I'm concerned) it processes in only ten minutes. It also left my hair super soft and conditioned. A box costs about ten dollars. The key is to choose a color as close to your natural that you can. I consider myself a medium brunette and tried Dreamy which is a burgundy brown. I've gotten lots of compliments. But there are many others. Give it a shot. Good luck!

Oh boy, Annette, can I relate! The only thing I ever liked about my hair was the color, a great shade of red-brown. Then - boom -silver strands everywhere! I started out using "Just 5" Medium Auburn, from Clairol, I believe. I got nice results and since you only leave it on for 5 minutes (hence, the name!) it more or less blends the grays into highlights without damage or dryness. However, my gray soon increased and there was just too much to blend :-mad. So then I tried Revlon Color Stay which was also pretty good. My problem came when trying to touch up roots. My hair is long and takes 2 boxes of color and its messy and awkward so I just bite the bullet and pay my stylist every 5-6 wks. If I had short hair I'd definitely do it myself. Clairol has an 800 number on the haircolor boxes and you can call for advice re shades etc. I called when I was trying to match my natural shade and they were very helpful and advised me to mix 2 shades together. I was too chicken to try it but it turns out my stylist mixes together 2 shades of the same colors they suggested.

Debbie - I've been using Olay Total Effects and it's pretty good (although pricey). I've also tried samples of DHC which uses olive oil (sounds gross, works great) but it's REALLY pricey, haven't broke down and bought any yet. They have a website you can check out just search under DHC skin care. You can get free samples from them.

You know ladies, we're way too young to be this old!!! I was laughing at myself last night as I had a white strip on my teeth, Nair on my upper lip and eye gel under my eyes all the while glaring at my roots!

Lorrie

Lorrie, we're just struggling with the contradiction between our youthful physiques vs our hair & skin! I sure regret all those hours in the pool or skiing at the lake with inadequate skin protection but I was fashionably tan at the time.

RE: Lorrie

Retin-A is worth a try for wrinkles, it also removes acne scars. I never have tried Renova, but I hear it is gentler.

Hi Annette
I started growing grey when I was in my late teens. ARrrgggh. I blame it on my Irish childhood (haha). Actually, it's just genetics. Anyhoo, I started coloring it in my early twenties---Preference (L'Oreal). I used light auburn which turned me into a redhead. When I got a "real" job out of college, I went to a colorist whom I adored. She moved to Annapolis, wouldn't ya know it, and I don't want to drive all that way from DC every six weeks. So I'm back to using L'Oreal. I had been doing it brown---golden brown and just plain old medium brown. I liked the results from both, but the roots were troubling to me because of all the grey. So I've switched to Golden Blonde, and the root regrowth isn't as "old lady" looking. The cp;pr makes what's left of my natural medium/dark brown a nice carmel shade and the grey strands are blonde. Instant highlights. My grey is STUBBBORN, but it seems to absorb the L'Oreal quite nicely. Certainly, my hair is drier from coloring it but it is not damaged. It actually gives my hair more body. Good luck!

Ha!

I know what you mean, Lorrie! It's scary when I think of all that I do to myself from my HEAD-To-My-Toes!! :-wow Thanks for the suggestions. Mogambo, thanks also, I'll check into those. Debra, I'm with you on being tan. Whew, it sure catches up! We were never told about sunnscreens as a child & teen. Heck, my Mom used to tan with us! Thanks guys!

Annette,
I have always had good luck with Nutrisse by Garnier. I recently bought Revlon's new High Dimension hair color. It's a 10 minute dye that's supposed to look natural. I haven't used it because my husband loves my gray temples. And it(the silvery hair), yep, matches my sun-worn face! :) So, what the heck. I am going natural! I'll be the only one of the ten sisters in my family who doesn't color her hair!

RE: THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES!

Hi all! Thank you for your input! I'm obviously a total piker in the hair coloring department - never have done it before.

I appreciate all of your suggestions!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-01 AT 09:02AM (Est)[p]I love Nutrisse. I have tried all the others. It is the only one I found that gives my hair a nice shine. I started going lighter, though. I found that my skin looks better with a lighter color.

I also don't use the entire box. I mix what I need to touch up the roots. I usually get 2 touchups per box.
