Sales clerks-/body image

Bunbun

Cathlete
OK, I'm going to vent: I was in one of my favorite stores today, trying on a t-shirt and standing in front of the 3-way mirror in the main dressing room area. I ask the sales clerk if she could please get me a small in a different color.

Clerk: (skeptical) A *small*?
Me: Yes, small, please.
Clerk: A *small???*
Me: (getting pissed off) Yes. A _small_..please.
Clerk: Comes over to me, checks the tag on the back of the shirt that I have on--sees that it IS actually a small, and finally goes to get the shirt.

Small, thing--stupid, really, and I know I shouldn't let it get to me. I have enough trouble with body image as it is: I am large chested--it runs in my family and I have never been particularly happy or comfortable with it. I'm at a good weight for my height and I have at least some muscle definition. But stuff like this always makes me question if my body image is realistic.

Anyone else go through similar nonsense with body image??

OK, venting done. :)

What a b&*%$!!! x(

I have a horrible self image. If that had happened to me, I would have left the store as soon as she went to get the other shirt. Enjoy the fact that you wear a size small and have big you know whats! Body image is such a difficult thing to see without bias.

She was just jealous.

Bunbun, that's no small thing! That was REALLY RUDE!!!!!! What cause did she have to act like that? What a snob! My theory: she's jealous of your....endowments!

I would seriously consider going to the management! If she can't deal nicely and politely with the customer, put her in the back where she doesn't have to deal with the public!

Be proud of how you look and what you have. Many women pay THOUSANDS of dollars to look like you do! Enjoy what nature has given you for free! :)

You know, you always want what you don't have--I know only a few well-endowed women who like being big, and vice versa for smaller chested women. Would be nice if we could all make the switch without having to resort to surgery. :)

As for the clerk, I was in such a rush to get back to work that it didn't occur to me to complain. I guess it's her problem, really--I would guess she's not be a very happy person.

You should've said, "Yeah a SMALL, I like the way it clings to my boobs!!" :7 :D Hahahah. If you could just say it with a straight face and not laugh, how funny!!

Bunbun. Oh, she was jealous alright. That's why she was being such a B! I would have said " bring me an size small, & if I want to wear this for a do rag, that is my business,"

You know what? Actually, I would more realistically have asked for her manager & would demand an explanation as to why her clerk was so rude, then I would have the store.

That was uncalled for. Did you do anything to prompt that? Then somehow, she was getting some sort of nasty pleasure out of embarassing you because she, herself, feels inadequate.

I'm digusted for you, girlfriend. If I had been there with you, I would have totally put the B in her place.

I think I would write a very polite letter to the manager telling him/her exactly what happened. If the clerk is this rude to you, she's probably rude to other people and is likely losing business for the store. Maybe the store can have her stock racks or something. I feel she needs to know her behavior was NOT okay, and I expect the manager would want to know if someone is running off customers.

I could have checked the size on the label of HER shirt, given her a disbelieving look, then reported her to the manager for her rudeness. That behavior is uncalled for.

Lol--some of these replies are great! As I said, I was in such a rush that when she said it it sort of registered but sort of didn't at the same time. It wasn't until I left the store and thought about it that I realized how rude she was. Of course, at *that* point, all sorts of snappy and clever replies occurred to me. :p

I really hate the way people can be sometimes. Takes one look at you and you've already been labeled. For example: I find that I get treated differently if I leave the house without makeup on and wearing my "around the house" clothes compared to being all decked out in makeup and wearing designer jeans. That is all it takes, no matter what my size is, at least for me. Honestly, I don't have time to always have makeup on, etc. And I hate it when ever I go to yard sales to sell something on ebay and people come up to me and say, "oh, you are so skinny, you can probably wear this size and that size" when they don't know my size at all. I just hate the labeling...it is tacky and rude and makes me feel like I am not a person with feelings at all...just an object of some kind. JMHO
Charlotte~~

Yeah & she was probably some 19 year old bimbo who never exercised a day in her life. Take comfort in the fact that in ten years the only smalls she'll be seeing will be her order of fries from McDonald's.

Maximus,
LOL! That's funny.

Toasty,
I agree with your comment about labeling. When I was 20 lbs lighter, it seemed that people were friendlier, I got more attention when I walked into a clothing store, etc. Also, if I go anywhere with my kids, everything is different. Of course, when I take ALL of my children anywhere we tend to draw a lot of attention as well as the inevitable question "Are they all yours?" . No, ***hole, I left the other ten at home.

~ Sorry, I'm not in a very good mood today. Maybe I should go visit this store clerk.

What a loser. She probably hates being a clerk in a store and the only power she has over anything in her life is to make customers feel bad about themselves. I also agree that she was jealous. And on top of all of that, she is obviously very bad at her job! LOSER with a capital "L"!

"Yes, a small. Do you have a problem with that? Or do you just have a hearing problem?" Then cock your head to the right and give a look as if to say, "I'm waiting."

Or, maybe you should cut out one of those ads for hearing aids, take it into the store when she's working, and hand it to her. Being that you couldn't seem to understand me when I said the word "small", I thought you might need this. Then turn around and walk out.

Aaahhh, there is some satisfaction in indulging in these fantasies. :)

I love everybody's ideas. Hey, Bunbun, I'm going to set myself loose on the stores this weekend, a rare event, and you and I seem to go to the same stores (i.e. Lord & Taylor). If you tell me what store and what she looks like, maybe I can get give her a hard time!! I'd enjoy being ready with some pithy comments for her. }( (Any chance you shop in the petite dept.?)

-Nancy

LOL, Nancy. It was actually in Esprit, on 5th and about 16th or so. I love their clothes, and actually all the sales clerks have been super nice/no attitude up until this loser. She's the woman in the back who does the alterations on the pants. No, I don't shop petites. :(
