SAHM & Work Full time 3rd Shift?

Is it possible to be a SAHM & still work 3rd shift? When do you sleep? Lately, I've been thinking how great it would be to not be able to pay daycare (I'm paying $250/week for 2 kids) and still be able to spend time with them. I know I would need to take a paycut, but it would be worth it in the long run to be able to spend more time with my kids.

Hi Kristi! How are you doing? DD has just turned one, hasn't she? Happy b-day to her!!!! I hope her ear infections are under control now.

I can't help with your question, although I may consider working "night shift" myself, to get my research completed, if I see some good ideas come out of your post.

Just wanted to say hi,
Sandra

Sandra it is so great to hear from you!! I occassionally see you post and wonder how you and your family are doing. Yes DD turned one on Saturday. Where has the time went? You will be celebrating #1 with DD very soon won't you? Didn't you have her around the 23rd? DD's ear infections are finally under control. She had to get tubes at 8 months old because her ear infections would not completely clear up. We were at the doctor's office literally every week because she was in so much pain. Now she has one every 1 1/2 - 2 months.

How is your research going? Aren't you finished yet? LOL :)

HI, as nurses, we do 12 hour shifts, and night shift is usually the choice when kids are little. You MAY take a little nap before the first night and struggle through...then you have to get at least 7 hours in during the day. If you're on 8 hour nights, you come home, get the kids squared, and then you have to sleep....you'll be a sahm, but you're body will be wacked if you don't get on a cycle. When my daughter was a baby, she'd go to a home day care and I'd sleep 8-12, pick her up, and she was a napper, so I'd give her a bottle, and she'd sleep 3-4 hours with me...but after only 2 years, I couldn't do it...lots of gals do though. Good luck!

Kristi-
I don't know if you have ever heard of the company, Silpada? It is a sterling silver jewelry company that is part of the Direct Sales Assoc. I am a mom and a full-time teacher. I fell in love with the jewelry when I had a show last December, and after finding out how much the rep made, I signed right on to sell it. I am not sorry-I LOVE selling Silpada on a part-time basis. I hope to take a much longer maternity leave with my next child, and this could be the way to reach that goal.

If you need $ on a very consistent basis, then direct sales may not be the best choice to start. But, most shows are done at night or on the weekends, and when you do build a good customer base, you could make some major money. I used to think Direct Sales were hokey, but not anymore. The good thing about Direct Sales is that you work around your own schedule, and if you sell something that you truly believe in, it is fun as well.

There are so many Direct Sales companies out there, so I am sure you could find something you would enjoy. If you would ever consider it, make sure the company sells products that reach people of all ages (not just moms with kids, older people, etc.). That way, your customer base can be diverse.

p.s. I have no clue when you would sleep if you worked 3rd shift AND had kids to take care of during the day. The hours are usually 11p.m.-7a.m., so that would be the time when your child (children) would be waking up (and when you would want to rest). I grew up in a blue collar town, and most people did production work in shifts (1st, 2nd and 3rd). If a husband and wife worked in a plant, one would usually work 6:00a.m. to 2:00p.m., and the other would work a different shift so there was always someone home with the kids.
Good luck!

As a nurse who works 12 hr shifts, I would have no idea when you'd get your sleep. My hospital actually has a very nice deal where you can work only weekends (F,S,S or S,S,M) which leaves the week free. We actually get paid about $8/hour more to work only weekends as well!

Good memory, Kristi! Katie-bug turns 1 on the 25th :) That's just crazy about your daughter's ear infections :( I hope she gets rid of them altogether. How did you celebrate her birthday?

I don't get to play online as much as I used to (wonder why?), but I do what I can. That goes for my research, too. I'm in the home stretch with that, thank heavens.

All the best,
Sandra

Many years ago I worked 11-7 for a brief time at the hospital and let me tell you, it totally messed up my body. I gained weight (I've read that staying awake all night causes your body to release cortisol, a stress hormone which can lead to weight gain), I was always tired, always hungry, and my days off were out of whack because I couldn't adjust to sleeping like a normal person. Some people have no problem on the night shift--my sister for one--but it wasn't for me. It did look appealing at first, I mean how many professions allow you the opportunity to be around for your little ones and still work full time nights so you don't have to pay for daycare? But once the reality sets in and your pulling all nighters, it's a different story!
