I don't know if you have ever heard of the company, Silpada? It is a sterling silver jewelry company that is part of the Direct Sales Assoc. I am a mom and a full-time teacher. I fell in love with the jewelry when I had a show last December, and after finding out how much the rep made, I signed right on to sell it. I am not sorry-I LOVE selling Silpada on a part-time basis. I hope to take a much longer maternity leave with my next child, and this could be the way to reach that goal.
If you need $ on a very consistent basis, then direct sales may not be the best choice to start. But, most shows are done at night or on the weekends, and when you do build a good customer base, you could make some major money. I used to think Direct Sales were hokey, but not anymore. The good thing about Direct Sales is that you work around your own schedule, and if you sell something that you truly believe in, it is fun as well.
There are so many Direct Sales companies out there, so I am sure you could find something you would enjoy. If you would ever consider it, make sure the company sells products that reach people of all ages (not just moms with kids, older people, etc.). That way, your customer base can be diverse.

p.s. I have no clue when you would sleep if you worked 3rd shift AND had kids to take care of during the day. The hours are usually 11p.m.-7a.m., so that would be the time when your child (children) would be waking up (and when you would want to rest). I grew up in a blue collar town, and most people did production work in shifts (1st, 2nd and 3rd). If a husband and wife worked in a plant, one would usually work 6:00a.m. to 2:00p.m., and the other would work a different shift so there was always someone home with the kids.
Good luck!
