S&H insanity question

Considering there is a CTX Upper Body Split, and considering that Cathe said in a post quite a while ago that she works out each body part for roughly 30 min. a week, would doing a S&H upper body split be effective or merely crazy? This is what it would look like:

Chest 26 1/2 min
Back + Supermans 21 min
Shoulders 31 min
Triceps 23 min
Biceps 24 min

Total time (not counting a warm-up or stretch): 2 hours, 5 1/2 min

Anyone ever try this?

I have not done this, but it looks like a good plan, with some minor changes.

I would not do chest/back/shoulders on following days, as chest and back both hit the shoulders as well. You might want to put your "off" day between back and shoulder days. Also, following shoulders with biceps rather than triceps (which are worked as synergist muscles when you do shoulder work) would allow more rest for the triceps, and better results.

You could also stick a lower body day between chest and back to allow more recovery for the shoulders.

Hi Lunacat,

I have done a one body part per day split and an upper body split with S/H. The upper body split was done with only one set at a heavy lift and a little longer rest. Took about 1 hour and 20 min. It liked it.

Then I'd say you're crazy:) .
But seriously, it's usually not a good idea to do more than an hour of intense weight work. After that, your form suffers, or you just don't have the energy to give your best effort to the workout.

One way your could do this is to just do 3 sets for each body part (I don't know how long that would take).

That's an interesting proposition. I have a lot of free time for the moment so I'm trying to take the opportunity to make some strength and definition gains. But at the same time, I don't want to overdo it. I'll try your suggestions. If you never hear from me again, it's only because I did all the s&h stuff.....then decided to do Legs & Glutes on top of it! :D

I will imagine you lying on your floor, unable to move, like a big, boneless lump, because you've got such bad DOMS all over!

Don't forget to picture my cat sizing up my tenderized muscles, because if I don't get moving with the can opener by evening, I'm going to look like Fancy Feast Chopped Chicken Dinner to her!

I once did three S&H sections back to back, I think it was shoulders, triceps and biceps. I was suitably fatigued by the end of it!!!!!

More than three body parts per day would not be possible for me, because as Kathryn states, I get sooooooo tired lifting heavy, I would be endangering myself for injury and it would also take too long.

Also, a heavy workout like that need some time to recover from. I did S&H legs yesterday and PUB afterwards. I am SOOOOOOOOO fatigued today I did not have the energy for my cardio workout.

So, trying to do it all in one day could totally work against you.

Thanks Clare. Considering I did CTX Upper Body Split yesterday and I can barely lift my coffee mug this morning, I may have to cool my heels for this idea!

I do this occasionally. I find it to be quite a relaxing two hours because it is slow and you have these 1 minute breaks. I do add a nice long stretch (sometimes yoga) afterwards.
