Running question

Hello to All of You,
I started a running program in Oct. in hopes of running a 5k in April. I was going along gangbusters til about a month ago. I pulled an inner thigh muscle, and I can't seem to get it to heal properly. I run on the treadmill at the gym and was up to about 3.5 miles. I let the muscle rest for 2 weeks, and it does not hurt UNTIL I get on the treadmill to run. I can even feel it a bit when I walk the treadmill. But it does not bother me on the eliptical ot the bike. I also teach 4 fitness classes a week and do 3-4 Cathe's a week. It does not bother me for any ofthe above workouts except the treadmill! I don't want to give up my goal of a 5k unless I have to. My questions are: do you think running outside would be better(it's cold here in MI, but I am willing to brave it) also has anyone else had this problem and how long did it take to heal? I am 45 and in good shape except for this problem. Thanks, Sher

My advice would be to go see a doctor and/or physical therapist. It also sounds like to me that you could be overtraining with your current schedule of 7-8 workouts a week. It may just be your body telling you it needs a rest. I know that when I get into overtraining mode, my knees start to bother me. It's my cue to give it a break and take an easy or rest week.

Hi, Sher. I am not a running expert, but I had a similar experience like yours about a year ago. Last summer, I signed up for a 5k and began running on my treadmill (had to use the TM because it's just me and my kids and I can't get outside to run too often). About 2 months into my program, I had this horrible pain deep inside my inner thigh. By 'deep', (it's hard to explain) I mean like deep inside and close to my joint and hip flexor, but it WAS my inner thigh.

I walked my mileage for a few weeks and got rid of step aerobics all together, since it hurt while jumping on that leg. I waited for a few weeks, but got really worried, so I went to my family Doc. She said it was just a muscle pull/strain and could have been as bad as a slight tear in the muscle. Her advice was to STRETCH extremely well and rest when I felt I needed it.

Needless to say, it took a while to go away. I couldn't do the 5k because it just hurt to run.

Sorry if this is depressing, but the UPSIDE is that once I went to the Doc I heeled on my own time. I stayed away from the running and hi impact stuff and did all Cathe cardio at low impact. I did her step on 6" with no jumping and her hi/lo all lo. Kickbox to a minimum.

It did heel, but my body just took a long time to do so. Yours may not. If it makes you feel any better, I just ran my first ever marathon this past January after a 24 week training program and the pain NEVER came back!

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Gayle,
Thank you for the insight! I believe it is a muscle strain similar to one I had in my calf several years ago. So I shall follow that inner wisdom that is saying to me, "now is not the time to run!" and carry on with my other activities for now and pick up my running at some other point. Your injury sounds very similar to mine. So I will put in my Cathe tape this morning, keep it low, and enjoy a great stretch after! Thank you again for taking time out of your day for the wonderful reply, and congrats on your marathon achievement! Sign me, Sher, whose 45 year old body still thinks it's 25 ha ha....

You're welcome, Sher. I love what running does to my body, but sometimes I also HATE what it does to my body. LOL. And thank you for the congrats on my marathon. It was something I've always wanted to do, and was actually afraid that it was too late to "become a runner". LOL (I'm 34 TODAY!) But...rest assured, it's NEVER too late to become a runner!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Gayle
