running made my legs stronger - now for the next level!!!

Oh man I am so excited. I took up running several months ago. Since then I put PLB away and did L&G and workout #5 on Timesaver for my lower body. I thought maybe working with heavier weights would impact my running negatively. Well last night I thought, I'll take out that baby and see how it goes. I actually was going to go down 5lbs on the weight afraid that since I hadn't done this workout in months that it would be hard to get back into. Anyway I thought na, and went to my last weight amount 30, 35, & 40 lbs. Well I was worked out but not fatigued. The whole workout I kept thinking ok, I'm gonna feel it soon. But I never got that old "argh, I can't do another" kinda burn. I am so excited, I'm gonna up to 35, 40 & 45 lbs next time, and I know I'll be able to do it. Even today the next day I don't feel that old "oohhhh I hate Cathe some much feeling }( ". Anyway I just wanted to share. Has anyone else who runs noticed that your muscles have gotten stronger because of it? I am so excited. I thought running would just tone me, not make my muscles ready for the next level!!!

Thanks for listening to my rambling!!! :)

Good for you, Julie! I ahve alwasy found that running helps my LB workouts and my LB workouts help my running...........etc etc. Some people find they can't do both cause one diminishes their performance in the other. NOt us! Yay!

Hi you two,

I have never been a good runner. But I have added walking to my workouts and have seen good results. I am walking farther and faster so maybe I'll be running soon.

A little jealous of you gazelles,

I finally convinced my husband to buy me a treadmill because I was really ready to start a running program. I broke my toe two weeks ago tomorrow and it's really put a big halt to everything. Reading your post is making me anxious to get going again. I'm hoping that running will help to lean my legs out!

How long/far were you running and how often???

That's great. You know it's interesting that everything I've read says that running doesn't build leg muscles- go figure!! It obviously does something!!

Its funny you bring this up....:)...I have run for about 25 years. I started lifting a few years later. My legs are very strong. I often found that after a tough weightlifting workout on my legs....I could just fly on a long run....sounds crazy but it worked for me....:)...Carole

Hi!

Running and lifting has made my legs strong too. The combination works great for me.

really not that much in comparrison to "real runners". I run about 2x's a week now that winter has set in. For the week it looks like between 8-9 miles seems to be my average. My longest run which I achieved two weeks ago was 6.5 miles! But compared to my DH who is getting pretty freakin close to 26 miles (for one run - jerk! j/j he inspires me so much!), it's not much, but obviously it's doing something. Besides my increased muscle I've noticed leaner inner thighs (ah finally!), an trimmer abs! I'm quite fit so to tone up more is quite a bonus!

Just curious...is running the only cardio that all you "runners" do or do you mix it up with other stuff? I'm finding the older I get, the less anxious I am to do super tough cardio workouts (like IMAX type stuff.) Running just seems to be very natural to me and I can raise or lower the intensity according to how I'm feeling, but is this enough?

Michele...I mix it up with Cathe Step, Nordic track and Taebo. I have alwatys believed crosstraining helps your muscles a great deal. When I turned 40 and started getting more injuries :+ a non-impact workout like my Nordic track helped me when I couldn't run. I have also started doing some Plyo work to help with running. What I like is Imax2 Blastmania (It's on the DVD) because its short and more like interval training and I think could benefit running also....:)...Carole
