Running-knee hurting advice/question

When I run, at the 4 mile mark my knee starts to hurt. What should I do: 1)walk awhile, then run again until it begins hurting again; 2)walk the rest of the distance; 3)not run at all?
I want to avoid having knee surgery later in life. I'm 39 years old. The fact that the knee hurts at all, have I already done permanent damage? My knee does not hurt doing step workouts and only slightly noticeable on occasion doing IMax 3(I just modify).

What advice would you give me know I still want to run if I can while not causing permanent damage?

Thanks to any and all advice!

When is the last time you purchased a new pair of shoes? Also, are the shoes you run in now appropriate for your foot-type (meaning you went to a specialty running shoe store and they analyzed your foot and recommended a shoe based on that analysis)?

I agree with Marietta about seeing if you need knew shoes. Worn out running shoes can be the cause of some pain. If it hurts though while you run, I'd stop. Do some cardio that doesn't aggravate it. Which can lead to more problems. I normally ice any injuries from running. 15-20 min a day, 3 times a day. You may also want to try some weight exercises to strengthen the knee area. Leg extensions are very good for the muscle surrounding the knees....just my 2 cents....:)...carole
