Running Check-In - April 11/06

Cathlete
Morning fleet women!:)

Well, I did another 3 miler last night and my hip is not bothering me at all today. I think it's wise that I just take this slowly, much as I want to say "yeah, next time I'm doing 5!!". I'm going to stick at 3 for this week (another run scheduled for Thursday), and then maybe add one more mile to next week's distance.

How is everyone else doing? Sarah, are you still on your high from the weekend?;)

Oh man, for once I thought that I was up early enough to start this thread:p I'm so glad that your hip isn't giving you any trouble Shelley!
Today is a rest day for me (and a 12 hour work day, so it's much appreciated).
Tomorrow I have a 5 mile tempo run scheduled, the weather is supposed to be pretty warm, so I'm going to make sure to get out there early.
Best of luck to all the runners who come after-:) :) :)
Mattea

Shelly- I think you are wise to build up your distance slowly. :)

I ran 6 miles yesterday; my plan is to run M W F. Today was non running short interval cardio. I did the WU & blast from KM, and my calves felt it. I have stretched them already , and plan to stretch them more today.

Hello Ladies!! Yes, still pretty high from my 19 miler Saturday! This warmer weather has me all jacked up, too!

Shelley, I am so glad to hear your hip is not bothering you after your latest run. Did you see my response about "leg length"? As hard as it is to take it nice and easy (not words used by most runners;-) ) I am sure you will benefit.

Mattea, 12 hours of work sounds like an ideal "rest day":7 . Do rest up...tempo runs are something else!

I am running 9-10 miles tonight with my training group so I will just do a few elliptical intervals this a.m....just to wake everything up.

Before our run tonight, the marathon coordinator is coming to speak to us about race weekend stuff. After our run, we are supposed to stick around for more race day information from the coaches. I am looking forward to it! Also looking forward to running in shorts!! I bought new ones that hold gels as my "long run reward"!!!

Good news about your hip Shelley! And taking it slow and not going too far is a good idea...

Mattea...12 hr work day?.WOW!...Tempo runs are fun, I am envious of your nice weather...:)

Judy..sounds like a good plan. Stretching is always good for us, and it sounds like your calfs need it...:)

Hope your run goes well tonight Sarah. How exciting to hear info about the marathon....:)...it's getting closer all the time, and I know you will do great!!

I have thought about investing in hip waders for running???..x(...I'll be doing a 5 or 6 mile run, some legwork and a new workout! One of the TLT's, Strength in Movement...

Have a great day..:)

Hello Ladies -

Shelley - Great news about your hip, and your plan to keep it slow sounds like a good idea.

Mattea - 12 hr work day? Sounds like no fun.

Judy - My calves are always sore after all the hopping around, a stretch sounds good.

Sarah - Have fun on your run tonight, sounds like you have a good running group.

Carole - Let us know what you think of Strength in Movement, I have been intrigued by these TLT workouts, but haven't purchased yet.

Today is a crosstraining day, so I am going to do some type of cardio medley at the gym during lunch, 15 min on 3 different machines, and then some leg work. The talk about the step mill yesterday on the forum makes me want to do it again, I haven't been on it for a while. I think I will do the Arc trainer and elliptical too.

Hi Girls!

I am just getting my lazy butt out of bed and I will be going for a run within the next hour.I have to take DD to school, plus I have to run into the school to get a ticket for tonights show.I have no clue what I am seeing but I think the kids are singing! LOL What a great mother I am?

I don't know how long my run will be today. It will be atleast 14 kms but it depends on if I want to go further and push her a little more again.I am so happy I increased my endurance this yr! This girl could out run me any day and she was always the one pushing me, now I am pushing her and when she goes home she is wiped for the day! I think interval running really does the trick!

Catch ya later,
Lori:)

Thanks for the encouragement ladies, only 7 more hours to go...x(

Judy-I remember in the Jan. 2006 rotation, when you did 400-500 jumping jacks and then 10 min. of jumping rope, and 5 min. of calf stretching, and I thought "5 whole min.?" Should have been more like 15 (for the 5 min. the two days after when you're still stretching out the DOMS)}(

Sarah-I know what you mean about this weather, it's driving me nuts being stuck inside today, honestly Carole and the other Cali-Rainers, we're trying to send some your way;-) You'll have to let us know what advice you gather from your marathon speaker tonight
Hmmm, cool running shorts w/ built in gel pockets versus hip waders, hmmm...decisions, decisions:p

Diane-Have fun! I Love, love, love the arc trainer!!!

Lori-I know exactly how you feel, my DH and I do most of our interval runs in a park (no traffic) and it takes quite a little running to get there, about 3 weeks ago he told me it took him about 15 min. to get there, and I said "It took you 15?" Thinking to myself, I made it in 13 the day before, got to love that feeling!

Any advice for tempo runs from the more experienced ladies out there?
Tick, tick, tick, 6 hours and 55 min. to go...
Mattea

Row...row...row.....geez, maybe I should buy a boat to get to work in! I can't believe all this rain in sunny? California!

Today was LoMax before work and some ab work tonight. I’m saving my run for tomorrow. Going to go for an easy steady state the hip permits.

Shelley - Great news on the hip! I'm doing the same with my hip injury and taking it easy, but I sure want to up the miles! Happy to hear you can run without pain though!

Mattea- maybe ya’ll can grow the California strawberries this year with all that sunshine!

Judy – Yep! I love these experienced gals advice!! I’m addicted to visiting here daily! I need to do what you're doing tho, and add a little more stretching than i do!

Carole – LOL – hip waders… I thought about you this morning during the downpour and wondered how you were going to run upstream! Egads, when will the rain let up? Just keep thinking about that hot summer sun during the Western States and you should warm up a bit… :p

Diane – I used to do those medley thingeys at the gym years ago—what fun! You’re doing a great job!

Lori and Sarah – You girls are some “runnin’ machines”! }( Lori – enjoy the play, I think I have one of those coming up soon for my 8th grader. Sarah, have fun with the pre-marathon stuff! I always loved that because it added to my pump it up attitude! Gawsh, I’m excited for you; the pig is one I’ve always wanted to run!

Great job everybody! I love this thread—so informative and inspiring! Have a great day ladies!

ETA: Fix my hurried typing error! ahahhaa

Good morning,

I managed to run for 40 minutes on the treadmill today, yay! It wasn't great but it wasn't as tough as it was over the weekend. Hopefully I've kicked this cold.

I'm interested in finding out more about how to implement tempo and interval runs too. I know I should be doing them, but it's been hard enough to add distance! I've been inspired by my latest issue of Runners World, though, to try to mix it up.

Have a great day,

Ellen

Hello everyone! Sounds like you gals are some great runners. I started running about 8 wks ago training for a 1/2 marathon. Luckily I had been doing Cathe for about 4-5 months prior to that, so I was in decent shape.

I ran my longest run to date on Sunday, 10 miles, and it actually felt great. This was probably due to the fact that the place that we ran was fairly flat and I have been training a lot on hills. Today I ran 5 miles, and I need to get in two more 5 milers prior to our long run this weekend.

Only a couple of more weeks until the 1/2 marathon. I can't believe I'm actually doing this!! ;-)

Ellen - 40 minutes is way better than none! :) I love Runner's World and you'll find great info there for tempo and interval runs. Also, there's a book I have that has some good information called "Running for Women" by Claire Kowalchick. You may want to see if your local library has it and check it out! (hey, no pun intended!)

Marsah - Welcome!! There are some great runners here! Congrats on the 10 miler! I remember how excited I was after I ran my first 5 mile trail run... good luck on your half and keep us posted!

Thomasina

Diane..I enjoyed SIM and I will most likely get other TLT's.

Congrats on building up your endurance Lori!! Go, go, go....:)

Mattea and Ellen...I do a different kind of tempo run using a Heart Rate monitor. I read about it in Runner's World about 5 years ago. I run my usual 5 or 6 mile course running easy for the first 10 min. Then look at my monitor and make sure I am in my 3rd zone for the next 4 minutes, then go up to my 4th zone and stay there for 4 minutes, then back to the 3rd zone for 4 minutes and keep going up and down 4 min in the 3rd and 4th zone til my run is over. Makes the run kinda fun, except for trying to read your watch in the pouring rain!!!

Tomasina...how do you like Lowmax?...it is a nice leg burner. Hope you get in a nice easy run tomorrow. OMG the rain...it poured during mile 2.5 and 3.5....I am thinking about building an ark....:)...did you know last year on the Western States course there was some snow!!!

Marsha...good luck on your half!! Congrats on your 10 mile run, that is good it felt great..:)...and yes, keep us posted!!

I know when the sun comes out and it will be 100 degrees, I might forget this brutal rain?...and ducks like this weather? Well...I got soaked and the shower afterwards felt wonderful...I did survive 6 miles and a fun TLT workout...:)

Carole - LOL - yep, I think there will still be some snow this year too and the Western States! I'm sure it is getting old for you, but I remember a good run in soaking rain only to have a wonderful warm shower afterward. Awe, I wanna start training for something soooo bad! But the DH says, "NO!" .....hhhhmmmmmmmffffuh! x(

Hey Everyone!

Just got back from my run...I don't know if the wind will ever go away! And its always the first couple of st's that are super windy.Oh well...stop whining right?

Mattea..thats to funny about your DH! Did you say anything or just let it slide? You wouldn't want to rub it in now would you? My DH would be out buying a new watch if that were me.

Marsha, Welcome! You are doing great! I have been running for a few yrs but this is the first yr Ive ever pushed myseld above and beyond. If I ran for 50-60 mins I was happy with that but now I have been pushing myself further..just to see what I can do.I don't think I would have been able to run 10 miles in 8 weeks though, thats great!

Carole, thanks for the cheers:+ :+ Its great when you know people who can understand and appreciate what one is talking about! Other then the group here, I pretty much keep my excitment to myself cause no one else would understand! LOL

Must go get a shower!
Lori:)

Hello Ladies! You all are so inspiring. Shelley, I'm glad your hip is not bothering you today.

Let's see, where do I start since I have not checked in since Thursday? Sunday was my long run, 5 miles, which is nothing for you veterans. It felt tougher than the past few weeks. I think it is because I was not drinking enough water. Shame shame on me! On Friday, I will be doing my long run again and upping it to 6 miles which will be the longest I have ran so far.

Today, I just got back from upping my short run to 3.5 miles. I actually ran outside today because it is so beautiful and warm. Not a cloud in sight and about 75 degrees. Perfect running weather. (Sorry I don't mean to gloat!) It felt so awesome to be outside, even though my neighborhood is hilly I still ran it in good time, about 38 minutes. Still pretty slow, but I'm hoping as my training progresses my times will decrease. If not then I will be running a 1/2 in probably 3 hours. LOL.

I must say that the last 1 1/2 months that I have been running consistently has really done wonders for shaping my body up after having my DD. Last month I only lost 3.5 pounds, but lost 6.5 inches. Even though I still have weight to lose, my clothes are fitting so much better and I'm even surprised by my endurance. It truly amazes me how much fun I am having in my training. Am I crazy or what?

Well, I've gotta get back to work. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Kristi,
You are doing awesome in building up your endurance and speed, hills are a plodding pace most of the time, don't feel bad, think of them like Lomax intervals}(

Lori-Yes, he read the look on my face and said, "What?" so I told him, but he was actually really proud of me (he's like that :7 :7 and yes I'm very lucky!) He can still whoop me most of the time, especially on the very long runs, but he always waits for me and never goes ahead, no matter if we're walking out a cramp or what:)

Carole-That sounds like a fun tempo run, I like that it uses the HRM and the watch, makes the time go really fast. But I my new batteries for my HRM aren't here yet, so I'll have to save it for next week--when...wait for it...it's supposed to be raining here!
:+
Mattea
3 hours, 45 min...

Hi Ladies,

I ran my 4 miles during lunch here at work. Tonight I will be at the gym working out my legs and maybe do another 3 miles on the elliptical. All of you ladies are doing great.
