running a 5k

Cathlete
I am doing a half marathon in october and there also is a 5k race the week before I wanted to do but wasnt sure if that was too close to the half to do. What are you guys recommendations? thanks!

If you are used to running the 5k distance and it's not too hard on your body then I would say go for it. It's short. I don't think it will do you any harm. :)

Have you done any research on training for a 1/2? According to runnersworld.com's running coach training software you should be running an 11 mile run on the week before your 1/2 (I'm doing a 1/2 in September). You could use your 5k as part of that 11 miles--just keep running after you it the finish line. LOL

Seriously, if you've never trained for a 1/2 check out runnersworld.com. The running coach training info is free.

I prefer to do my final LONG training run 2 weeks prior to the race so to me, running a 5k the week before sounds like the fine plan.

Everyone is different. Do what you think will work best for you. For me, running an 11 miler the week right before the half would be too much. When I trained for my first half, my longest training run was 10 miles and it ended up being done like 3 weeks before the race and I was fine.

I am training for an 18 miler now. I orginally scheduled my longest run of 15 miles for 2 weeks prior to the race but now there is a 15k (9.3 mile) race I really want to do that same weekend so I'm tweaking my plan. This is probably what I will do for the last few weekly long runs:

15 miles
15 k race (9.3 miles)
7.5 miles
18 mile race

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!:)

yes I have done 5 half marathons. My longest run will be 14 miles and it will be 3 weeks before the half. The weekend before the half I will only run 7 miles. I did this last time and it worked great for me. I had trained only running up to 10-11 miles before and always felt exhausted by the end of the half and the very last time I trained I used a combo of jeff galloway and hal higdons training shedules and it had me run over the 13.1 and I felt great after the half. I actually could have ran more if I had to. so I am following this again hoping to achieve the same results. I will do the 5k on saturday and do the 7 on sunday and then on that week will be tapering. I am hoping to come in under 2hrs this time. thanks for all the advice.
