runners w/ plantar fasciitis...

jcm

Cathlete
my overpronating has turned into plantar fasciitis and progressed into posterior tibial tendonitis. i've seen ads for the strassburg sock, and things like it, that you can wear and they stretch the tendons in the arch of the foot while you sleep or are sitting. has anyone tried anything like this or known someone who has?

Hi, I had PF several years ago. I went to see a podiatrist who was a runner, and we developed a plan of attack that really worked for me.
a) I wore PowerStep brand shoe inserts always. From the minute my feet hit the floor in the AM, I was wearing shoes with that brand of inserts. No barefooting it! (Today, about 6 years later, still wear PowerSteps).
b) While sitting and reading or whatever in the evenings, roll a golf ball under each foot, and not particularly gently. Some people use cans, but he recommended a golf ball.
c) I started buying my running shoes (even though I couldn't run at the time) at a local place that watched me run and then made shoe recommendations based on my stride.
d) Stretch, stretch, stretch. I used to hold the yoga "downward dog" position for like five minutes, it felt/hurt so good. :)
e) We did cortisone injections. Some people choose not to.
f) I went to a physical therapist specializing in sports medicine, who gave me a whole stretching routine that was extremely helpful.

Sorry, I've not tried the strassburg sock. I probably would have, because when I'm injured, I usually try many different things. Good luck to you.

Leanbean- great advice. I am going tocheck out the PowerStep shoe insert. Do you wear the original or improved brand.

Here is a link to how I got rid of PF twice, once in each foot. I do believe stretching and rest are the magic part of PF recovery.

RE: Stassburg sock didn't work for me - dorsal night splints did

The Strassburg sock didn't work for me, my toes are too flexible/bendy. When I wore the sock it tugged my toes back and didn't stretch the bottom of my foot or Achilles tendon at all :(

The only thing that helped my severe case of PF was dorsal night splints - I wore them all night and they were comfortable. I even wore them in the daytime when I was sitting for any period of time.

I found these at FootSmart - http://www.footsmart.com/Product.as...htSp&KEYWORD=[dorsal+night+splint]&src=FSpaid (and I bought TWO of these, expensive but worth every dime).

Eventually I did get surgery on my right foot but both feet are now completely pain-free. I still stretch my feet, Achilles, calves & hamstrings every day and I wear orthotics in all my shoes. Case solved!

I did find that after the acute pain was cured the 'Step Stretch' device was very helpful for stretching the foot, Achilles & calves http://www.footsmart.com/Product.aspx?ProductId=84 I heard negative things about the double-foot device, but I love the single/regular one.

Hope you find what you need, PF can be *so* painful.

Hi Judy!

I wear the original PowerStep, although after seeing the ad, I may have to give the new and improved a try. :)

PF was stubborn, but I guess I am too! Sounds like you are too! Downward dog is like my secret in the arsenal of stretching.
