Runners - Question regarding speedometers?

Mic

Cathlete
I picked up this little item from Target to try and track my running distance but I swear the thing is off, it'll register way off for the same timed run. I don't do this all the time but I would like to keep pretty reasonable track of my distances. Do you have any suggestions on where I can get a reliable one? Thanks for any assistance.

You could just use USATF.com or some other such site to track your route. They have a feature that allows you to zoom in on your neighbourhood and plot your run and will give you distance in miles and kilometers.

Thanks, I'll try that, but you know how sometimes you gradually increasing your mileage so you might want to have a hand-held one too. Thanks though, I'll try this.

I love my Garmin (a 201), but if I could buy all over again, I'd get a 301 or higher. This is exactly what you're looking for.

I'm just curious Cathy, what is it that makes you say that??

I have only used mine in the basic mode to keep time and mileage and I am so happy with it that I haven't even THOUGHT to learn how to use the other functions yet! LOL :p

I wanted to be able to upload my training information to my PC, but the 201 only came with a serial cable and I don't have a serial port on my laptop...So I wound up having to buy a USB/serial cable...THAT didn't work either...Spent a lot of time with Garmin's tech support...they even sent me their own cable...long story short: the 201 has PC compatibility issues and the software just won't work. Garmin basically acknowledged flaws in the model...Granted, I like it fine for getting the mileage, time & pacing info - it's not absolutely necessary to have the info on my computer -- but to have spent $100 on the thing, I would have liked the promised software to work. I do feel it's a little shady on Garmin's part to keep selling that model instead of fixing the issues with it.

Cathy...that is crappy about the 201. I didn't realize you had that much trouble with the software...:(

Mic...you also could check into a Timex GPS...they are fairly accurate and are not as high as some of the newer Garmins...:)...Carole

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I will consider everything I've just been told, thanks for all the much needed information. Thank you.

I second the mapmyrun.com for a "cheap" solution.

I programed a few routes depending on how many hills I wanted to run and how long.

You can save different routes to your own login so you can play around with any area you want.

Good luck and have fun !

I've tried using mapmyroute.com and actually found it harder to use then my garmin! LOL Am I a friggin' wierdo or what!? :p
