Runners Checkin April 6th

OK Sara, you opened the door now :) I'd like to know, too, what you have been eating for running.

I am starting up again TODAY, actually in about 1 hour I'm off work and going to head outside to see how far I can go. I can usually get 2-3 miles the first time I go out for the "season". I don't have a good treadmill so I don't run in the winter. I'm hoping to check in here with everyone.

I'm going to run a 10 miler in October for sure and I'm looking for a good-fun 1/2 marathon sometime before then.

See you all soon, probably after my run.

~Marcia~

Good luck on your "first run out" Marcia! I hope that the weather is a beautiful spring day where ever you are, that always helps:D
Meatlessinca-I'm a Saucony girl myself, TR6 right now. I need a wide toe box and a slightly narrower heel, so these work great.
Although, I recently read a thread on shoes that Cathe had responded to and she was describing her experience at Fleet Feet where her feet, running style, stance, stride, etc. were all professionally evaluated and then recommendations were made to her based on those. I am so jealous!!! The closest Fleet Feet is over 2 hours away for me:( Does anyone know of othere stores that perform a similar service?
I'd love to know the stuff about my feet, that, well, apparently I don't know, lol.
Mattea

Mattea, I'd make the 2 hour drive some weekend. Very worth the service! I have a local store that does this, too. Do a search and see if there is an itty bitty shop in your area. Call around. If they are reputable, they will allow 30 days or so for returns. My place actually took a pair back after 6 weeks, even though it was a 30 day return policy.

What do I eat to run?? Complex carbs at every meal. Oatmeal twice a day (because I love it so), whole wheat breads and dinner usually has whole wheat pasta. As long as you are cautious and mindful of your serving sizes, no worries!! I eat spinach/romaine salad with every dinner and steamed brocolli (yum yum yum). I never eat anything I do not thoroughly enjoy. I flavor my oatmeal with fresh fruit and pair it with egg whites. Some call it boring and bland...I'd slay a dragon to get it! I sure hope that's what they serve in heaven!

I am not sure how often we sneeze...I will ask Elaine and get back to you!! It's her call, really!;-)

Sara: thanks for answering the question about the eating. I was gonna ask that too! :)

Now, let me ask you this: what you are eating right now...is that for maintenance for for losing?

Let me know: I pretty much eat clean and for some reason, I am having a hard time taking off these last few pounds! Isn't that AMAZING??? LOL! anyway, I need all the help I can get. Please let me know!

thanks:)
Gloria

tomorrow is a 3mile run and hopefully finish up TEAR it up!

Sara...are you sure your gonna get into heaven?:) LOL

I didn't know you only started running 14 m ago? You took off fast! I thought you had been running for yrs!

I am getting off of work soon.My plan was to run outside b/c the weather was nice and everyone had something to do this evening, but when I looked it was raining!:-( I am going to run outside tomorrow morning though with my running partner so that should be a good one.Now I am wondering what to do tonight...KM and UB or run and GS LEgs...decisions...decisions!:D
Lori:)

Mattea-

Depending on where you live, some other running specialty shops besides fleet feet or a sporting place will fit you to a shoe. I personally have not had great luck with Fleet Feet, but it probably depends on store to store. I had the best luck with a little local guy's running shop and have been in love with my Mizuno Wave RIders ever since. Of course the manufacturers always "update" the models you like but so far so good for me.

You should do an internet search for your general area on outdoor sports or running retail etc. and see what comes up. Then call and find out what they can offer in fitting to a good shoe. Or perhaps you could do a search for something that is in the area of Fleet Feet 2 hours away from you and plan a "shopping" day for shoes. Oh, and in case you didn't know, there's tons of info online like Runner's world site etc. that have extensive information about selecting proper running shoes.

Whew! sorry for such a long post, i got carried away! I'm just in my "honeymoon" phase of running again I guess....lol :D

Gloria, I spend most of my time maintaining or trying to reverse the damage I did while PMS'ing.x( I am not trying to lose X amount of pounds. I mostly want to maintain my current muscle mass while running a gazillion miles. I do a weekly weigh in and body fat measurement to keep a ballpark idea of my lean mass and make sure there are no major dips. There is usually a lovely spike near TOM from carb over dose and water, but that is the beauty of tracking both numbers...I can see it is a lean mass gain...which includes water weight!

Hi Ladies,

I ran 4 miles during lunch and will be doing at least 3 on the elliptical before my upper body workout tonight.

Yesterday I did a 30 minuter workout that was all I could manage.

Have a great evening everybody!

Josie

Thomasia,

Which Fleet Feet are you refering to? I live in LA and the closest
to me was the one in Santa Monica which closed 2 months ago.

Josie

Josie -

I live about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento, so I drove down to the Fleet Feet location in Fair Oaks, a suburb of Sac. The owner of that store is alright and seemed to know her shoes fairly good, but I had bad luck with the people she had working for her. They fit me in a shoe for over pronators (which I am not) and I started having IT band issues shortly after. Anyway, I guess it really depends on who owns the place and how they are running it. Since that happened 5 years ago, I have educated myself a bit more about shoes.

Thomasina

Thanks for the feedback on Fleet Feet services Sarah and Thomasina! You're both right, I should probably make the trip, maybe this summer if I can get away (oh, a day of having to shop for shoes, poor me;-) )
I will check around in my area however, I know we have a Dick's, but I'm not sure if there is a smaller shop that actually knows what's it's doing. I'll have to check around, again, for shoes...how will I ever escape this dreaded task:D
Mattea

Tomasina...I live about 2.5 hours north of Sacramento. Ever do any runs north??...We have a Fleet Feet again here. I was actually diagnosed by my Physical Therapist when I had to go for a torn calf muscle right after I turned 40! ( remember this you youngsters )...anyway after he watched me walk and run he told me I should always run in stability shoes.

And for all of you that don't know...I am a Vegan...:)...and the sneezing....well..I forgot to take another Zyrtec this afternoon and I have sneezed a few times...:)

Great runs fit women...:)

Carole,

I haven't done any runs north of here although I know there are some beauties! I just got back to running (only the treadmilll so far) recently after being injured last July. I am hoping to get out and do some runs in the future, but just tonight when I was trying to "ease" my DH into the idea of me running outdoors and maybe a few 10K's again when the spring bug hits, I got the same "no way, you're not running all over the place; you got your running machine in there". LOL-he thinks he's telling me what I'm going to do! Just wait, I'll be getting registration fever before you know it! Nah, he's really a good guy, he just doesn't want to see me go through what I did last year with the hip and not being able to run. I was all set up to run Chicago and BAM, just like that it was a no go. Very upsetting for me, especially since I always gave running my all while dealing with a bit of asthma. Anyhoo, blah, blah...I was going to mention to you that I live up here near Colfax which is very nearby the Western States hoopla (between Truckee and Auburn). Actually, I've run a many times on the Western states trails in the Auburn Canyon and down by the confluence. Beautiful area and chock full of cougars! Boy does that freak me out. Anyway, I was considering working an aid station somewhere this year on the States so maybe I should follow up on that. Who knows, maybe I'll see ya out there!

Oh, and speaking of Vegan, I have a question for you. I am a vegetarian but I don't like milk and I rarely have anything with eggs in it. BUT, I love renetless cheese, and this is what causes me to not be a true vegan. So, oh yeah, my question.....Do you have any special vegan cookbooks or anything that you use or can can recommend? I know about Fuhrman, and although I love veggies, I just can't eat that much bulk of greens in a day. I want to stay a bit more towards vegan so I just picked up a book called "Everybody's Vegan Cookbook" and it seems pretty good so far. Any other ideas you have for Vegan eating would be appreciated.

Ok, I guess this is a plenty large enough post! Sheesh, it's almost time for Lori to start the next day's Runners check-in!

Thomasina

Tomasina...I sure can relate to your injury! My last one was achilles tendonitis and it had me missing races for about 9 months, I still have yet to get my speed back. I think the treadmill is good for you right now and I hope your hip gets better soon! I did the Way to Cool 50K in March of 2005, OMG...talk about a tough course. I do believe some of that course was along the Western States course too. In fact you go by the exact spot where the lady was been killed by the mountain lion (sorry, her name escapes me).

I don't get all the greens required by Fuhrman every day. I don't worry and I try my best. My fav cookbook is "Vegan Planet" by Robin Robertson. I can also tell you about a site I really like for any questions and some great recipes www.vegsource.com There are some vegan cheeses but the are not real good. I get one in my health food store called Vegan Rella. Hope this helps...now I'll go post in todays thread!!!
