Cathlete
hello everyone,

Today is arest day for me. I will run wed/thurs this week and then nothing until the big day!

Sounds like everyone had a good workout yesterday. I need to do more total body workouts but will add them after the half marathon. I have only been working total body 1xweek and upper body 2xweek. I didnt want the extra leg work to wear out my legs for the races. I think I will look into an eliptical trainer. Sarah said it really helped with her running.

gotta get the kids ready for school ,talk with everyone later!

Good morning runners

Hi Laura...taking a rest day is a good idea. Legwork will also strengthen your legs for running but right before a race it is always good to cut back. I feel the ellipitical did help Sarah alot as crosstraining is a good thing to do!

I am doing S&H Legs and a 6 mile tempo run. Another hot one here, but the forecast shows rain friday night?...Gues we will have to wait and see.

Enjoy your day...:)

Hi, ladies! I've been MIA since late last week. It was a crazy weekend, with my son's First Communion Saturday, Mother's Day Sunday and my younger sis in from N Carolina. I played hostess all weekend for quite a few people, and it took its toll. But.....back at it.

What did I miss over the weekend? Laura's 5K, I think, right? Did Elaine post her St. George training schedule YET??? What else?

As for me, I've been contemplating a bunch of different ways to start my training for the Philly half and Marine Corps full. Not quite sure YET what exactly I'll follow, but for this week, I started with an easy 3 mile run this morning, followed by Core Max 1.

Gayle

Good Morning everyone.

Laura- Ahh a rest day!!!! What a good thing it is. Enjoy your day.

Carole- Wow a 6 miles tempo run. That sounds like a goody. Hopefully the weather will hold for the weekend. You must be getting what we have had here in Maryland for a week. I'm ready for some sun. Sat is my 5K and it's looking mighty fine as far a the sunshine goes. yeah yeah yeah.

Gayle- Yes, we missed you. Elaine has not posted her training yet. I would love to see what you have as far as training goes for the half. I'm taking my time a preparing for my first in Oct so I am going to overprepare and begin to train late June. I would appreciate any input you have as far as your half as well. Feel free to post or pm me.

Today for me was a speed interval 40 min run. I covered 4 miles today. Hopefully this will imporve my time Saturday. I'm so excited. Then I did 30 min of yoga. Now I'm off to eat some oats.

Good morning runners,

Today is PUB + CC#4 or 5.

Enjoy your rest day Laura.

Thanks Shelly, my race is July 9.

Carole, I hope your toe is better, and I hope you have fun today with your speedwork. We got the rain yesterday, and it hit hard! It stormed all night, and they predict it will rain today too. Hence, tm for me today. :) (I'd love to go outside since it's cooler after the rain, but we frequently have severe lightning storms here in Florida with the rain, and people are killed by it every year. Since last night was a doozy of a lightning storm, I'll be taking no chances! :))

Hi, Gayle, sounds like you had a great, albeit busy, weekend!

Karen and Mattea, aargh -- I did it again. I made great eating choices in the am, and even during my luncheon with my friends, but too much time passed between lunch and getting home, and I did myself in with leftovers from the bbq on Saturday. I'm throwing the food out today. I didn't throw it out before because kids enjoy it, but the temptation is too great when I'm hungry and not in the mood to cook.

Barb & Christine, I'm the same way when it comes to "middle of the day dread." If I don't at least startmy workout by 3pm, it becomes really hard to find the motivation between homework, dinner, chores, etc. I knew when I didn't get my workout in before I left yesterday that it might not happen unless I was able to get home at least a few hours before I had to pick the kids up from school. It didn't happen. I didn't get a chance to get to it until 10:30pm, and since I still felt yucky by the first blast, I called it quits.

Amy, I hope your exam went well.

Hi Judy, Sarah, Elaine, Wendy, and all who follow.

Enjoy your day!
Pamela

Good Morning!

I'm back from Santa Cruz where the weather was beautiful! Sometimes it can be quite foggy and cold there but we had sunshine all weekend long.

I'll be doing hill repeats, PLB, Ab RipperX and a segment of Stretch Max today.

I do have my marathon training plan all done. What I did was take Hal Higdon't Intermediate plan and changed and added things to where I know it will work best for me. If you want to see the schedule I'll be glad to send it to you. Just let me know........

Sounds like you are all doing great. I need to go back and read through the days that I missed to see what you are all up to as far as races and stuff goes. I have sort of skimmed through them but the only thing that is sticking in my mind are the references to Mr. Yummypants!

Talk to you all again soon!

Hi,
Sorry I've been MIA for about a week. I had a freak accident at volleyball last Wednesday night. I jumped for a ball near the net, fell, and twisted my left knee. When I went down, I heard a weird popping noise but no pain. I stood up and my knee started buckling.

Long story short, I had x-rays and no broken bones, but I saw an orthopedic surgeon on Friday and his initial diagosis is a torn ACL (knee ligament that governs side motions and stability). He sent me for an MRI and I don't see him again until May 24th. I'll have to have surgery to replace my ACL probably by the end of the month and a couple of months of physical therapy. The prognosis is great though, 100% full recovery and use of my knee. I just have to be patient, ugh!

So I'll be back....probably in the summer or fall when I'm cleared for running. Good luck to all of you, talk to you in a couple of months. :)

Kathy G

Oh, Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your knee! Please keep us posted. Are you able to do anything in the meantime, anything? You'll be in my thoughts!

Elaine-I'll take a look at your training schedule. My email is [email protected] if that's easier for you! I printed off Hal's Novice and 2 Intermediate workouts, plus the one at Runner's World. I am relaly lenaing toward Higdon's plan, with additions like you did. I'm curious to see what you came up with.

Pamela-leftovers get me everytime! Now, unless it's healthy, I only make just enough for me and the boys.

Karen-what is the exact date of your half??? As for MY training, I just started today with an easy 3 miler. I'm starting early as well. I kind of took a whole week (plus a few days) from serious running, just to change things up. I'm actually training for a HALF WHILE I train for a FULL. I am doing a half on 09/17/06 and a full on 10/29/06; exactly 6 weeks apart. My training schedule is going to fall perfectly so the weekend of the half is a 13 or 14 mile run. Perfect timing. I'll share mine too, when I'm all done putting it together!

Gayle

Good morning to all you fine runners:) :) :) I had some serious motivation problems this morning. I think this middle of the week problem is contagious! Seriously it was quite hard to push myself out the door today but I overcame it and got the old bod movin down the road, managed 8 miles but I took it pretty easy...for me anyway.
I've pushed myself quite hard the last 2 weeks so I'm going to slow down and take an easy week. I have my first trail race June 3 and I want to be in good shape for it.

Judy- Are you still above water? I thought about you listening to the news this am. Re: route changes, not only does it help with motivation but it is such an important safety factor. I run alone
(unfortunately, there's no one near who shares my love for running!)
so I mix it up all the time...I don't want anyone to be able to predict where I'll be!!

Christine- Did you have fun doing your pikes? I dont have a problem with those anymore but the levitation holds are still defeating me. I can usually only manage 2.

Laura- I second the motion about an eliptical- I'll be using it more this week to give my legs a break from the pounding. It does make for excellent cross-training!

Gayle- Welcome back :7 We missed you...sounds like you've been
plenty busy.

Carole- 6 mile tempo and S&H legs.... one word--AWESOME:eek:

Karen- I have 2 books to recommend- The Runner's World Complete Book of Running by Amby Burfoot, and The Complete Book of Running for Women by Claire Kowalchik. I refer to both of them regularly
and find them very useful. Look forward to hearing your race report this weekend.

Elaine- Sounds like you have a very well thought out marathon plan.
You have a tough workout today! Good luck!

Pamela- you're description of Florida brought back memories. I lived there for many years. Glad to be out of the hurricane belt now though! Have fun with PUB today....love all those bicep curls:7

Later today I'll tackle ME. Take care all!!

ShellyC

Hello to all!

Got to gym this morning for a run. After a warm up, I started running at a 5.5 pace and increased my speed by .1 at the end of every song. When I reached and completed 6.0 I started my cool down. I ended up running 2.4 miles in 25 mins not including w/u or c/d.

Laura, good luck on your upcoming race girl!:)

Good morning all!

I did IMax 3 instead of Plyo X for P90X today. All the running is certainly making a difference because while I was sweating up a storm, my heart rate stayed relatively low. I burned about 120 fewer calories than the last time I did it, and I worked hard! I really do love that workout.

No run for me today. I'm going to do another 4 miler tomorrow morning, so I'm giving the ole legs a break after IMax 3.

Laura - sounds like a great plan! Counting the days yet?

Elaine - sounds like you had a good time! I'm just bummed I didn't get to meet you - July, then.

Carole - I'm with Shelly - a 6 mile run AND SH legs? Wow.

Shelly - yeah those crazy levitation holds get me too. I can just about do them if I use dumbbells to make my arms longer...

Gayle - sounds like quite a busy weekend! Happy Mother's Day!

Karen - good luck this weekend! How far are you running again?

Pamela - oh definitely after 3PM I can't do anything. I'm up at 4AM, so if I'm not done by around 2, I lose any motivation. I've tried to run after work and felt as if I had lead in my shoes. I'm such a morning person... :p

Oh Kathy! I'm so sorry! How horrible! I'll send good healing vibes your way to help you get better soon!! I'm glad you'll be 100%, but how frustrating to be down for a few months.

Ignore the above thing I'm an idiot.

KathyG- I'm so sorry to hear about the knee. It's so hard to take it easy when you want to workout. We will be here for you when you get back to 100%. Don't leave up though. You have wonderful input to add even if your not running everyday. I hope all goes well with you.

Christine- Good going on Imax3. I rarely do that one. For some reason I always grab Imax 2 instead. Maybe because I have it memorized. Have fun on the run tomorrow.

Gayle- My half is October 14. I really am doing quite a bit of research to make sure I do everthing as well as I can. It's kind of like a school project that you just can't stop thinking about.

ShellyC- Thanks for the info on the book. I am going to go check them out. I recently got out from the library Running 101 by Joe Henderson, and then Marathon The Ultimate Training Guide by Hal Higdon. Just started to read those. Mainly I'm researching training and the differnt needs in nutrition for longer runs.

Wendy- You go girl. You did fantastic today.

Pamela- Dont' feel bad. My main problem is the 7:30 hour. It's always almost time for bed when I totally blow it. I hate that. I've been back to normal since Mother's Day. I know I need to be for the 5k Saturday. I think having those short term goals and races keeps me in check and my bad days are only one day as oppose to a week. Now I'm hoping training for the half will keep me really focused. "She say with her fingers crossed"LOL

Hey - wondering if any of the California girls are running the Bay to Breakers? I decided not to this year - getting back to the car is such a hassel! But it's a fun race.

Hey, Karen - where in Maryland? My dad lives in Bel Air. I've lived there too, and worked in Hunt Valley. I love Maryland, but I call it the "Drive Through State". Every time I told someone I lived there, their response, "Oh, Maryland, I've driven through there." :p

Thanks ladies. I'm still doing upper body (mainly Cathe's Gym Styles somewhat modified to dumbells only) and modified floorwork. I can't do any cardio until after the surgery when the physical therapy starts. It's killing me! You have no idea how hard it is to see runners on the side of the road, my treadmill, and my cardio DVDs and not do anything, lol!

I'm so sad that I won't make my goal of a 50k this summer, either. I'm hoping I have enough time to train for a marathon or half-marathon before the end of the year (after doctor clearance to run). Keep you fingers crossed for me. I'll check in every now and then if no one objects, cuz I'm a wannabe runner right now...lol. ;)

Kathy

My fingers and toes are crossed for you Kathy. I can only imagine how hard it will be for you. I hurt my calf in November of this year and took off two weeks only to come back and really hurt it. I then took off a month of just low impact and yoga and haven't had a problem since. There is power in rest. The problem is feeling well enough that you feel you can do it but what is going on on the inside doesn't match the outside. Your a smart women with a good plan.

Christine- Agh!!! Your dad lives about 20 min from my house. How cool is that. Hopefully when you visit him don't just drive by I'll come over and meet you for a good ole run.

Laura - {{{HUGS}}} That has to be hard! I'm soo sorry...

Karen - definitely!! I'll stop by! That is so cool. Too bad I didn't check in here in March - I was out there for 4 days! I did do some running - there's an old railway that has been converted to a trail. It's a nice shorter run. 2 miles one way and some good hills. I wish I had something like that around here.

Kathy, I was wondering just today what you've been up to. Sending healing and sympathetic vibes your way!!! You are a tough and smart lady and I know you will sail through this. You obviously are extremely fit and that makes all the difference in recovery. Please keep checking in though, we need your input and wisdom---at least I do!!
