runner with pains in their butts

Calling all runners. I need help finding a cure to my pain. I am an ultrarunner and had a baby last September. I have been keeping my mileage low this past year because of the baby and the intense pain that I have where my hamstrings meet my butt. I had a mild form of this condition prior to having the baby but now the pain is more intense and in both legs. I have been to sports medicine doctors, physical therapists, podiatrists, and an acupunturist. The acupuncture has been great in reducing the pain but I know that the problem is still there. I have a leg length discrepency which has been corrected (supposedly) with orthotics. Does anyone share this problem? I am desperate in finding a solution because I want to get back to running up the hill tops again.

Thank you

Dina

I have that problem in my left leg right where my upper hamstrings are. I just bought a new pair of expensive running shoes that I had fitted. I am hoping that helps and I also have found that I get the pain more when I do hills and when I run faster than 7.2.

Yoga has DEFINITLEY helped me. I do about a half hour of yoga after my runs usually. It helps to lengthen the muscles and open them up more when you run. Runners tend to carry stress and tension in the periformous(SP?) area which is right around the side of the buttocks. I tend to get really tight there. I am fairly new to running, so I think there may be be a lot more seasoned runners with advice. Good Luck!!!

I think Susans yoga idea is an excellent one. I started incorporating yoga into my marathon training and I think it has helped a lot! And man, does it feel soooooo gooooood! I am a huge fan of stretching!

I'm also a faan of strength training...are you doing your squats, step ups (aka leg press) and lunges?

Thank you all for your quick advice. I have a Power YOGA for RUNNERS and I do it about twice a week when I do a treadmill run and then repeat the stretches after a run outdoors. I feel hte pain mostly uphill and when I try to pick up speed. It is very frustrating being at the back of the pack when I am normally top 10 runner (for ultras) Do you recommend a particular yoga workout I can buy? I also have bought a pilates workout but I have not recieved it in the mail. My PT recommend that I incorporate pilates to lengthen the hamstrings.

I also weight training for the lower body but I have to be careful not to over work the hamstrings because it will keep me from running for a few days.

Do you guys recommend I get Cathe's leaner legs workout? I keep reading about how great it is. I have the Gym Style legs.

I love hearing from you all.

I have a couple of Power Yogas too. Bryan Kest and Baron Baptiste. I also have incorporated some Pilates and I think it does help. Windsor Pilates has a good workout using the stability ball. If the uphills seem to hurt this area can you just run flat courses for awhile to ease the pain?
