rotation question

Does anyone not follow a rotation and just pick workouts based on how you feel and what you feel like doing that day? Is there more benefit in doing a rotation or does it really not make a difference?

Thanks for the input!
Michele

P.S. Have a great holiday to all who read this, and a very blessed New Year!:D

I can't follow rotations posted here because my schedule does not allow me to workout the same days each week. I have to vary it every week depending on my work schedule. So, I either make up my own rotations, or do what I feel like doing on that specific day. I try to do three days of cardio with two days of strength training one week, then reverse that the following week. Sometimes I can workout five or six days a week, sometimes only three. Seems to work for me! I think that's the key to all this. Finding what works for YOU. :) Hope this helps!!

Hi Michele,
I don't really follow rotations but work out based on how I feel. I do however try to do a certain number of strengths and cardio each week but it's always entirely on how I feel. My main goals are towards overall fitness rather then trying to have specific goals. I have tried to follow rotations in the past but often I wake up and find I just don't feel like doing what the rotation calls for!!

I'm know there are benefit to rotations, but I think it depends on what your goals are and my goals are very simple!

I follow rotations in the sense that I will plan a week like this:

Sat. Cardio/Lower body circuit
Sun. Upper body
Mon. Cardio
Tue. Lower body
Wed. Cardio
Thu. Upper body
Fri. REST

I generally decide which video will fill these guidelines the night before or the morning of my workout. I used to plan exactly which one I'd do, but then I wouldn’t have time to do a particular workout or I wouldn’t feel like doing the one I had scheduled, so I find it easier not to be so regimented.

I have never really followed a rotation... I've actually been working out for years and have always done just what I feel like at the moment. This summer, though, I had about 7 weeks of injury-free time before I went to Europe and I decided that I would create my own rotation. I followed it neary to a -T- and it gave me the absolute best results I've ever had in such a short amount of time.

I think that rotations are extremely beneficial as you can see what "needs" to be done as opposed to what you want to do. But I would never do them all of the time, as it takes out a little bit of the fun factor for me. There's this "commitment" issue :D. I do want to start another one for the new year to kick my butt back into shape big time - even if it's only for a month or two.

Sara!

Okay...when you say that a rotation gave you the "absolute best results," you know you're gonna have to give it up! Do you mind sharing?

RE: Sara!

Hahahaha :)

Not sure I remember; not sure if I even saved it.

Hmmmmmm....Here are the basics: It consisted of doing IMAX 1 one time per week, IMAX 2 one time per week, and dong Slow & Heavy Legs and Shoulders (not my HEAVIEST weight, but moderate to heavy)immediately after each one of those workouts. Surpisingly, it felt REALLY good to do that slow and heavy work after the endurance work of the IMAXes.

I also did Karen Voight's Energy Sprint two times a week and leaner legs immediately after that at least one time per week. I also did a LOT Of the Cross Train X-press cardios on the other days. I will honestly say that I really like Energy Sprint for toning my legs. And it's not too difficult, so it balances out all of the other hard work during the week.

The major things were: I was able to get plenty of sleep and rest at that time... so I could work out hard and not suffer. The IMAXes, Slow & HEAVY, and Leaner Legs were the fundamental workouts. I also did some upper body once a week, but I don't remember what I did :\

Hope this helps :) It really worked well for me.

RE: Sara!

Thanks for sharing!

Is Energy Sprint an interval workout? I'm such a Cathe die hard that I'm not familiar with other instructor's stuff!

RE: Sara!

Hey Michelle,

It's an older interval workout.... its intensity isn't anywhere close to Cathe's Interval Maxes... but it's decent. Even though it is 10 years old, I still enjoy it (from time to time). I used it almost exclusively with some light weights when I was initially recovering from my hip flexor injuries.

I also wanted to make sure to add that the very very hard workout schedule only lasted for about 3 1/2 weeks. The rest of the time I was still not in good shape and wasn't pushing myself that hard.

Hope that helps :) I really enjoyed using that rotation, whatever in the heck it may have been!! :D

I just tend to do whatever workout I fancy but mix it up with weights and cardio on different days.

HOWEVER - after reading the positive benefits of rotations on the forums I think I'm going to try and be a bit more structured in 2004.

I have tried to stick to rotations ever so often, do good for a week or 2, then, bam... Something comes up, time crunch, forget, extra trips, you name it. So I try to just do something as many times up to 6 as I can. I do try to balance out cardio and weight work. I'm usually in a time crunch with a 3 yr old. I do use them as a guide in case there is a vid that I don't have I will sub.

Hi!

I'm with a lot of you.. I go with how I feel that day but TRY to have a general plan. 3 weight - 2 cardio - 1 interval. 1 rest day is key.

Recently I've done a BB rotation (all the tapes) and I'm working on my 2nd week of IS.

Like someone above said. I had excellent results when I included IMAX in my workout. Well today is Boot Camp. I'm taking the day off so NO EXCUSES!
