Long lines of cars are heading out of coastal Texan towns as Hurricane Rita gains strength to become a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. Evacuating parents are being told to take with them photos of their children and to give them identification in case they get separated. Texas Gov. Rick Perry urged: "Homes and businesses can be rebuilt, lives cannot... Now is the time to leave."

That is from cnn

Jess and the texas gals stay safe!

I have followed this news story today. This is unthinkable that the very people who lived through Katrina and were displaced to Texas are now facing another devasating hurricaine. Texas girls, stay safe... I know those of you near the coast are evacuating. Jes... I am keeping you and your family in my prayers. Where do the rest of you Texas girls live?:-( :-(

My in-laws are in Houston and they are staying - I wish they would just go. They live in a nice house and are somewhat north of the city in The Woodlands, but still! They said it's insane down there, they were in line for 2 hours at walmart at 5:30am this morning.

I hope it weakens before it hits land. I never pray, but I'll be praying tonight. Be safe everyone!

We have a lot of Texas gals here, don't we? PLEASE keep yourselves and your loved ones safe. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Carol

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone down there, too! It seems horrific that these two devastating storms are going to hit in almost the exact same area!

Stay safe, everyone, and God Bless!

I didn't know it had reached Category 5 status either. I have goose bumps just thinking about it. Take care and stay safe.

Jes, you and your family take care. You're in my thoughts. Laura and Nadine, too, as you're all farther south than we are. I don't know how or IF Rita will affect Dallas. Andrew has been clinging to me for the last hour, wanting to know if we're part of the evacuation efforts and what will happen to us and our home if Rita turns and hits Dallas. Holy cow, he's only 5. I've been showing him the Texas coastline, explaining that that's where the danger is right now. Then he saw footage of the traffic clogging the highways leading up north and he asked if we're going to be stuck in traffic, too. Sigh. He's calmer now, singing "todos los amigos esta aqui". How I wish that were so.

Hugs,
Pinky

Thanks for all of your prayers -- luckily we don't live along the Galveston Coast (I really feel for them and pray for them!) but we do live close enough (in the Houston area) to get the really bad effects of the hurricane. I've been through Hurricane Alicia and it caused a lot of damage and if I remember (it's been 22 years since that storm hit!) it was a Category 3 (may have been worse -- my memory has faded since!) I think this is a Category 5, so -- !! Most of my neighbors have left, but we are staying -- hopefully everything will be okay!

Let's just really pray for those along the Galveston Coast because I know that those homes will probably not be left standing. I think because of Hurricane Katrina that the people in Galveston are NOT taking this lightly and have evacuated.

This stinks, huh?!!! But like always -- we will be okay with God's help! Thank you again for your prayers!

Emily, earlier today I got a forwarded email from my sister in California that warned us in the DFW area to stock up on water, fill up our tanks & get food for 72 hours. I deleted it thinking it was a chain mail meant to incite panic. I mean, Texas is so big, how could this possibly affect us, right? Well, apparently it was not a joke. Employees got an email at work stating to take the same precautions. Good Lord! If WE have to take precautions this far inland, I can't imagine the destruction they face down at coast, yet again!

Well I heard that we were to expect some impact here in Oklahoma as well. I really dont feel like we will have more than heavy rains and maybe lower wind intensities. All of you in the area take care. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm one of those people who luckily doesn't live near the coast but I am about 80 miles northwest of it. Even though we won't get hit as hard as Galveston and the other coastal cities, we have been advised to evacuate because the winds (worst case scenario) in our area could still reach 100+ mph according to the news tonight at 11pm. and it is still considered a category 5, so we have decided to go to Austin to visit dad and hope and pray that we and our family and friends and actually anyone else will suffer no effects from the storm whatsoever. Thank you for your concerns and prayers I know that people still pray for others but it's still consoling to hear it. Thanks so much for the peace you've just given me.

Hugs and Kisses
