Right number of calories

I have been keeping a food diary and counting my calories. So far I have not tried to alter my behavior, I'm just keeping track of what I eat. The very fact of writing things down has already altered my food choices for the better which is a good thing.

Now I want to deliberatly cut my calories, but not by too much.
I've tried that. I know where that leads and I have no wish to go there again. Here is my question (you knew I'd finally get around to it). Is there a formula for figuring out the right amount of calories for an active person at such and such a weight.

If there is, do I base the formula on what I want to weigh, or what I weigh now? Basically I'd like to lose at the pace of 1/2 to 1 lb. a week.

With my food diary, I'm finding out that my intake can vary by about 400 calories on some days. I'm just interested in safe sensible weight loss with no gimmicks that allows me some flexibility to have treats once in a while.

I posted something a while ago that figures everything out.I got it from an oxygen magazine.I will see if I can find it...

I found it, it is under ask cathe, and press number 8, and farmgirl posted how many calories in may.I am sure there was an easier way of doing this, but I don't know how.Hope you can find it.

You can do a search on the web for RMR..or resting metabolic rate. You will find calculators that will tell you how many calories you burn at rest and some even have it so you can add your physical activity to that. Those kinds of things are all over the internet!! Even if you type in "total calories needed for women" it will probably pull something up. Janice
