Reverse grip on deadlifts

Hi Cathe,

When doing deadlifts with heavier weight, I sometimes find myself losing my grip on the bar when using the regular grip - both palms facing backward.

I've seen body builders use what I think they call a reverse grip - one palm facing forward and one palm facing back. I've tried it and found it easier to hold heavy weight longer. My question is: Do you know if there are there problems with using this grip? Such as muscles on both sides not pulling the same, posture isn't correct, etc. Thanks for any advice.

Gayle,
The grip you're refering to is called a "mixed grip" (a reverse grip would have both palms facing forward). When I've seen recommendations to use this grip, it's stated that you should vary which palm is forward and which palm is back with each set. It's a very effective grip when using heavier weights.

Thanks for the info, Kathryn. I'll have to make sure to alternate palm positions set to set. I haven't been doing that currently.
